Understanding Facebook

Forum I’m fairly new to Facebook due to a strongly worded suggestion from the company I retired from concerning social media. So as a novice I’ve noticed a significant number of warnings about scammers. I think I avoided being scammed when someone listed a “Bruce Compton” rebuilt OF for sale by a John Gupta. The price was low but I inquired by sending a message to the person. It came to the point of me asking for a PayPal account to send payment to. After receiving the account email I looked it up on PayPal and the account owner’s name was let’s say drastically different. So I didn’t send payment and posted on the listing that I looked up the account owner and it wasn’t John Gupta but someone named Yussef Owoliabi, I received a messenger text saying proceed with payment that was the correct account. Needless to say I did not and that’s the last I’ve heard & Can't even find the listing again. How bad is Facebook with scammers? Almost not worth looking other than viewing stuff from people’s name I recognize. One person posted to not buy anything on their account because it had been hacked! How’s that possible? Thanks for helping me out with the how to’s in advance. Best John
