Today is Flag Day

Post by WayneJ » Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:32 am

Today, June 14, is Flag Day, which celebrates the "Birthday of the Flag". The "Stars and Stripes" was officially adopted by Congress as the official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. The first observance of Flag Day was held June 14, 1885 at Stoney Hill School, near the town of Fredonia, Wisconsin. The observance was conceived by 19 year old school teacher, Bernard Cigrand. Although Cigrand only taught school for one year, he continued to campaign for national recognition of "Flag Day". That recognition finally came on May 30, 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14 of each year.

I grew up in Mequon, WI, about 10 miles from Stoney Hill School. After his year as a school teacher, Bernard Cigrand went back to school himself, eventually becoming a dentist and settling in Batavia, IL. The house he built in Batavia is two doors away from my own home in Batavia. In a sense I have been chasing Flag Day and Dr. Cigrand most of my life.

Stoney Hill School was restored in 1947. On the Sunday before June 14, the Ozaukee County Historical Society holds an Open House at Stoney Hill School. The following photos were taken this past Sunday:

A small farm town south of me about 30 miles has an unusually large Flag Day celebration,
with a parade and fair in the town park. It is amazing how many people throng to this little
burg to be a part of the festivities. Of all the parades and events I participate in as part of
Vets on the Farm, this is by far my favorite. I park the TT on the main street and walk in the
parade with the rest of the VOTF group. It is like 1940, all over again. The trip there and
back is a splendid drive in a Model T.
