Recently Starlink satellites had a problem and connection was lost in areas. The cause given is a bad update.

At the same time for the same duration there were problems with the militaries sat come. Information on this is very limited. I'm guessing it was not a result of an internet update on a civilian network.

The sun has a very minor CME, either it got thru and disrupted networks which shouldn't have happened. Or we are much more vulnerable than we thought.

If it was a network attack the disruption (hours) is one for the record books. Also at the same time they chose to attack starlink?

Thought number 3, what if hypothetically the update included an AI that took a couple hours to stop. Could this be the dawn of sky net? Musk did say a couple weeks ago they had grok 4 AI and it was "scary"

Any other options I'm missing out on?

I say this respectfully, albeit frankly. One option you missed is refraining from posting this kind of stuff on a Model T forum.

Isn't that what "Off Topic" is for all things not related to the care and feeding of the Model T?

Yes, OT is for non-T stuff. In this particular case the question that arises is if there were an EMP attack, would the T's still run or would the EMP wipe out the coils? Early T's with wood coil boxes have very little metal to form a Faraday cage while later T's with steel coil boxes might survive. Any thoughts?

You still have metal surrounding the coils since the early T had the coil box in the cabin, so I would say "Iffy" If they don't survive then take the spare set out of your metal tool box. The Magneto should survive with no issues early or late!

It is a question I have been pondering. Most consider anything pre circuit boards to be emp safe. I think about the Carrington event of 1859 and how it messed up what little tech there was at the time, namely the telegraph. The recent outages in Spain, Portugal, and Southern France were most likely solar in nature. This was via an induced current in the ground, in a case like this a Faraday cage might make things worse when what's needed is insulation.

The 1850s telegraph system had miles of wire on wooden poles that collected electromagnetic energy and delivered it to the telegraph stations, where in many cases, it was concentrated enough to damage equipment. Things like older cars that have far less exposure, and fairly simple, accessible, and rugged electrical devices, would be far less likely to sustain damage. The problem with modern electronics is that they often contain very complex circuits that operate at very low power levels, making them vulnerable to damage from very small power surges. Most all of the sensitive and delicate circuitry is not accessible for field servicing. An EMP event might be more of a problem, but it would probably be more localized. Many circuit boards are so delicate that they have to be handled with great care to avoid damage from static electricity.

Yes, before there was an Off Topic section, people here complained about off-topic posts in the other sections. The solution was to create an Off-Topic section. Now people are complaining that the Off-Topic section contains posts that are off topic? Am I missing something here?
