I have seen that video before. I enjoyed seeing it again. The first one, it may be mostly reproduced, however, it was a meticulous and faithful recreation (I think, if I recall correctly from following its reconstruction, that it may actually have a few pieces from the original car). The "Beast of Turin" was an incredible land speed record car back in its day!
Several of the other earlier speed cars were also great to see. After the "Great War" ended, a lot of aircraft engines became available for cheap. Many of the airplanes from the war effort were not in condition to be kept air-worthy, so they were mostly burned (mostly fabric and wood), leaving a lot of decent and powerful engines. Quite a few of them found their way into hill-climb and other speed cars during the '20s. Fun stuff!

Shocking HP for such old cars. I like the guy with the fire extinguisher putting out the grass fires from the exhaust!

I would race any of these cars for pink slips with the Wild Cherry II on the short uphill tracks we run. They are impressive but power to weight ratio and modern transmission differences give me an unfair advantage. The Wild Cherry is essentially a model T based dragster. I didn't see any of these cars lifting the front wheels off the ground on the launch like we can. That said, I would gladly swap driver's seats for a race with any of the guys driving these machines.

Eric
Are you taking the wild cherry to Lincoln for the Speedster Reunion?

I assume some were retrofitted aircraft engines.

Love that 1905 Darracq, it is a 'recreation' by a well known UK builder but still a great machine with that big open valve V8, the torque is unbelievable when he 'blips the throttle' :D

This is the original car, sold at a Bonhams auction in 2006, even this was rebuilt from parts as only the engine and part of the chassis survived..

I find it amazing how the old time racers loved aircraft engines. And the modern guys just seem to love the Merlin Engine like our Mr. Leno.

At the 2012 HCCA Holiday Motor Excursion, Jay Leno brought his 1917 Fiat "Botafogo" special. 22L 6cyl, very cool. The link is to the JL Garage episode about this car.

Great thread, thank you for posting. I hope it's not moved to "OT." I personally hope the new format doesn't evolve into several sites for different categories. While i like this format and it's ease for uploading photos, I miss how easy it was to scroll down threads, and the fact all threads were on one page. I should, however don't take the time to switch over to "OT" and check what's there.

Furthermore, for years, I designated "OT" on threads that were usually about pre-T Fords. I noticed someone asked on another thread why a Model K thread wasn't moved to OT? I used OT as a way of "warning" readers that it wasn't purely Model T, not that I felt it was unrelated to Model T.

Anyway, many of these massive racers met Ford racers on the track and hill climbs. They represented cutting edge technology and advances that would affect all automobiles, including the Model T in future years. Thanks again for the interesting posts, and I hope this site doesn't fracture into several different topic designated categories.

My 2 cents...

A few of my favorites:

Cottin-Desgouttes. This racer won several events in France and Europe in it's day. It was rebodied in 1914 so looks a little more streamlined than it's original configuration. It was the only racer to place higher than the Ford Special racer sent to France in the summer of 1911in the Mt. Ventoux hill climb:

This 1909 Blitzen Benz raced for several years, with Bob Burman setting the world mile speed record 140 mph in 1911, that I believe stood for several years:

Oh yes, and a Ford beat it in head to head competition, a timed mile, in 1911 at the Michigan State Fairground track:

Huge engines and massive torque. Something about that always brings a smile.
Life is good on the lunatic fringe. Tom
