It's a standard pattern 'Liberty' truck, they were made to standard Army specifications by several manufacturers.

Solid wheels, rubber and otherwise seemed to be the norm.
Probably a carryover from the old lumber wagon days;
"lumberwagon" became a euphemism for a very rough ride.

Yep, "Rides like a lumber wagon."

I hadn't heard that expression for years.

When I got my TT, I had never so much as ridden in a T, so the driving
experience was a total novelty. Growing up on a farm, I was amply familiar
with horse riding, wagons, going where no roads existed, all those things
people of the T era knew as normal life. As my truckshook itself apart as
speeds climbed north of 15mph, I could look at the passing trees and maiboxes
and remember that speed on a horse. I remembered the ride too !

I feel an inner "groan" as I look at many of these larger early trucks, as they
would have all the cush and comfort of a lumberwagon. But then I remind
myself that roads in those days would stop 99% of drivers today, and that speeds
were comparable to a walking horse. It really is a trip to think of this through
the eyes of people for which this was all new, fast, and exciting. So happy to
put the team out to pasture and climb aboard a "rocket ship" like one of these
motorized brutes ! My TT rides like a cloud, compared to these big trucks, I
am sure. Fun stuff to think about when I go chasing down old forgotten paths.

This road was particularly "period". Steep, narrow, and rutted, with stretches
of DEEP powdery dust that hid perils beneath. It was a little harrowing, but at
the same time exhilarating to drive. Really put that long ago reality in perspective.

The title for the last picture of the tanker truck must have been cropped off by mistake.

The title is "How many state workers does it take to oil the road?"

The third one up with the crew standing on it is a White circa 1918. Maybe a 30-ton, chassis price $4100 that year.
I'm not sure those guys are going to work the oil Perry.
I'm not sure what the last two are. Charley Shaver would have known

This was my grandfather’s first dump truck - a ‘27 International - the first of many hay-binders, as he called ‘em. I think this truck is brand new - evidenced by white markings on the frame. He kept his nine draft horses - Percheron and Belgian Brabant - till he trusted motor vehicles.

I can only imagine the power that Packard had. From driving my White I have an little idea.

I doubt anything would stop that truck so long as it had traction !
Massive logs that team skidded down to load, then drew them onto the truck. They are not heavy drafters either !

Reading some of the old local histories for this area and others, it's evident that bridge failures were a fairly frequent occurrence in the early 20th century. I'm assuming that most of them were built by locals, and were deemed "good enough" by their own standards, but things changed with more big-government intervention that ramped-up with the New Deal in the 1930s. Government strategic planning and access to massive funding resulted in much higher standards for bridge-building. We are still seeing the results today.

Road bridges were built to handle expected loads, and usually did. When heavy, motorized equipment such as trucks and steam traction engines began using rural roads, some bridges failed due to gross overloading. Early railway and road bridges were often marvels of engineering, and many were and are works of art as well. There is a rather old bridge in Brooklyn, NY that is still in service today and carrying multiples of its original design load.

And an even older one in Cincinnati by the same builder. I crossed it a year or two ago after a fiery truck crash on the I-75 bridge. Apparently it is currently closed for refurbishment but is slated to reopen.

Yes Rich, they were part of the war effort, here's another one, an official war department photograph with the canvas top installed, but with the side boards up, when opened they provided a place to stand on as you can see in the previous picture.
In the center of the picture you can see the radiator shroud of the motor that privided drive for the machinery and electricity for lighting, I would give my right arm ( beter take my left though) to own one of those trucks :D

Has anyone been to Carbonada Washington? Located on the northwest slope of Mt. Rainier. This was a mining town years ago and the local sewers drain into the old mine shafts! When I was there about 25 years ago, almost everyone in town had some type of Model T. Nearby were Buckley and Enymclaw. In one of those towns they had a parade of Logging trucks, many of them were TT's. We watched the parade. I wonder if they still have a T club there?

A lot of excessive horsepower nowadays comes from impatience. My dad hauled a caterpillar on a 1945 GMC with a 216 ci engine. You just used a lower gear. You still got there soon enough.

Nowadays, some people are never satisfied, and frequently use the word "underpowered." What that means is that someone was able to pass you on a hill.

The burst of energy and roar of exhaust must give a feeling of power to those who rip past my T going slow. I might have done the same if I had those horses under the hood. The difficulty is telling if they are saying "Hi" or disgusted with the old fart poking along.

I have lost track but don't remember the clay pipes. The fill spout out the front looks familiar but I can't place it.
Or maybe it's a pipe dream!
I hope the fellow on top doesn't roll off.
When did I do that?

It is a great setting. Dogs are harder to paint than pretty girls. The Depot Hack and vegetation are nice. Where do you suppose that is?
========================

Painting dogs and pretty girls are all a matter of tactics and
pursuasion. In my paper route days, a Black Lab greeted me
every day at the mailbox for a little petting. One day he showed
up as a Green Lab. The same color as the freshly painted house.
Seems "el Doggo" got a little "too involved" in the painting process,
and the kids felt compelled to "finish the job".

I see a "ball park paint cost???" post on the "Real Post Side". I'm surprised Perry hasn't quoted the cost of painting a Ball Park.

Another one that might have been posted before. I don't know how to search to see if it has been put up or not. The thread is long enough

to be impractical to look at every page.

Rich,

I've stopped giving Ball Park painting estimates and I have advanced to Stadium painting estimates. :?

Outside your Arena Perry?
I can't tell what I'm looking at in this one. I see steam tractor parts and truck parts. It's almost like it's been photo shopped.
???
I hope they got the load delivered.

There is a lot of manpower. I don't recognize the truck.

I love the old truck pictures and their settings. This truck looks to have a contractor sign on the side and in the background is a steam roller

I thought this was interesting. Oregon Trail pioneer Ezra Meeker revisited the route of his youth several times beginning in 1903, promoting the historic significance of the Oregon Trail. In 1928, Henry Ford gifted him with this updated "Conestoga Wagon" to promote his travels. Ezra was 98 at the time.

I wonder if that rig still exists... I'd love to have a '28 AA with that type wheel and an express style bed.

Meeker fell ill and died in December of 1928. The "Oxmobile" (as it was called) reverted to Ford, and was exhibited in Greenfield Village for a while, then shown around the country until it "disappeared" sometime in 1935. Perhaps Ford archives has mention of its fate ?
