Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Orange Trucking Co. 's trucks were dark green. Garrett Freightlines bought them out in the early 1950s, then ceased operations in 1990 when interstate trucking was deregulated. Garrett had an interesting history. Established in Pocatello, Idaho in 1913, an early TT sat atop the gatehouse of their central terminal for many years. I often wonder what became of it as I watched it degrade in the weather over a couple of decades. It was removed sometime before the business closed I believe.

Thanks Rich. Garrett Freightlines also had this 1910 REO that was in local parades. I don't know what became of it either.

I had no idea "modern" gas cylinders, as we are familiar with them, are over 100 years old! I guess after seeing enough old industrial carbide generators I assumed cylinders were WWII era.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I think I have a picture of the big engine somewhere. I don't know the stationery stuff very well.
I believe the truck is another Avery.

Even the knobby tires are the same. I have found the best resource to figure out what make these are is this site Herb. We have covered so many.
It has an odd light.
Thanks again.

Yawman & Erbe Manufacturing, 228 St. Paul Street, Rochester, NY. (1919).
The truck looks to be a Packard and probably 1919 or later from the date above. When did I do that?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It is a White Rich. The chassis looks to be the same 15-45 that the YPC buses were on in the early 20s. 24" wheels and 36 X 6 tires but Model T headlights. And yes, Perry, the old Bell System logo. It is very deluxe with the nice grab bar.

Wonderful Herb! It's 1910 Pennsylvania but I can't read the script on the screen below the driver. That may be the make of vehicle.

OK, I broke the code. It's a Frayer-Miller. They were built ..."from 1907 to 1909. In 1910 F-M was bought out by Kelly Motor Company (who would later become Kelly-Springfield)". This Coors truck is similar to Herb's including the horn. Perhaps a standard Item. It is also taken supposedly in 1910.

I thought this was a pretty cool feature of this 1917 Autocar. Notice how the seat pops up to get at the engine at about 4.32 min. into the video.

I find the positive attitude displayed in the early advertising to be in pleasant contrast to the toxic, constipated drivel issuing from many commercial concerns today.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The studio view of the early Packard engine is very interesting!
That Aluminium crank case with castings on top and casting/pressed steel on the bottom is great! Too many questions tho.
A diaphragm governor?
With that vertical timer, it's like an N engine all growed up. ?
Fresh painted felloes but a rusty/pock-marked rim...
And a foot-feed that is like so many others if you see it. Not sensitive enough.
Wonderful pic!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I love seeing those Buick trucks. I had to go back and see what I posted about them. Here is a link to it if any are also interested.
https://mtfca.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php? ... 412#p78334
These trucks had the same basic chassis and engine that my 2-cyl Buick Runabout has and was called a Light Delivery Truck. Apparently they were offered in 1911 after the Model G and F 2-cyl cars were discontinued and the Model 14 with a different 2-cyl was added. I'm confident that old engine would haul a good load fine with proper gear reduction. Here are some body variations. Thanks Herb for finding those.

It seems that European practice is very much to use cast steel wheels and not so often wooden spokes compared to US makers.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I don't recognize that one. The holes in the side of the radiator should be a good identifier. The body design is quite a bit like the ones Witt Mill put on their trucks like this one.
"Witt-Will was a conventional assembled truck using Continental engines.... The plant was little more than a large garage, but.... was virtually in the shadow of the White House.... Few were sold outside the Washington area."When did I do that?

Adrian, that is a Gaggenau Benz K50, we have one come in in our shop every now and then for service, it is owned by the Mercedes Truck division but they have no mechanics there who know enough on these old beasts.
This one is from 1919, one of two still around the other is in the Mercedes museum in Stutgart i believe.
Nice photo !

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
It used to be common to move buildings. Haven't seen it done much lately. In 1949 our family was outgrowing our 2 bedroom house. There was room on the lot for another house. About 6 miles away a house was for sale to be moved. It was a 3 bedroom with a large attic. They wanted to build 6 unit apartments on the existing lot. My parents bought the house. First problem was that they had to cross trolley tracks so the roof had to be cut off and laid down over the house. They moved it all the way and I watched them set it up on big beams in the yard. Then my dad and some helpers built a new foundation out of reinforced concrete with bolts set in the cement so the house could be bolted to the foundation. It was done so accurately that every floor was level and every wall and doorway was plumb. Everything went well until they raised the roof back up and one worker stepped through the plaster ceiling. I helped dad put new shingles on the roof.
The old foundation had been made of red bricks and there was also a fireplace and a brick chimney in the kitchen which had been removed. One of my afternoon and Saturday jobs was to chip off the old mortar from the bricks. I got 5c for every brick I could save without breaking. We got enough bricks to build a new used brick fireplace. I lived there from 1950 through 1958 when Dolores and I married. Seemed like a long time to me but only 8 years!

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
This is not a TT truck, however it was overloaded! This was taken at Torrey Pines, where the University of California San Diego is now located. About 1947. My dad used to make baby furniture in Glendale Ca. They got an order for cribs and bassinets for the Navy and we took this truck load to the Navy Pier which was at the foot of Broadway, in San Diego. They were for families of "war brides" from Japan and Asia. I was along at that time and took that picture with a very cheap camera. We had to get out and measure at some under crossings along the way The older woman is my grandmother who also went along.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Thanks for thinking of potatoes Herb. I hated the thought of coal being in burlap bags.
The memories of stacking them came back to me today. Working for a farmer was so valuable to me in later life.
I've always liked Autocars and should have picked up some chassis that were around.

Maybe it was used with some type of pole setting device, or a trailer set up for hauling and rolling out large spools of wire.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I see a caption: "1931 Indiana Bell Telephone Company tow truck (Bass Photo Company Collection, INDIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY)" for one source. A large fleet of vehicles may have justified their own wrecker. It is a White with a similar chassis to the Yellowstone buses with 24" wheels and the same fenders. The typical gas lights were replaced by Model T headlights. The body work looks like around '26.

Speaking of which (20s crime) 0ne of the buses in the park was running poorly during prohibition. The gas filler opening in the gas tank was about 4 1/2" diameter. It was discovered that whiskey bottle labels had had come off bottles stowed there and covered the outlet restricting flow.
Just for reference.

I don't think I've ever seen pictures of a TT with heavy-duty front wheels ! I wonder what the crop is they're hauling ?
Nothing more fun than seeing a vintage vehicle on an old truck !

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I just finished puttIng a coat on the top sides. I'm conflicted - I love bare wood too, but I don't feel it's "period correct". Varnishes were even more delicate "in the day", and less practical. I like the look of it painted to match the body, and I had the pleasure of working with really nice wood, and the pictures to remember it by ! Rich, I thought of you and your comments on painting outdoors on a cool summer morning. Fun !!

I know what it was that tipped me off. It's a short box. Very nice!
Aesthetically, the short box pickup looks nicer (to me) than a long box.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I'm glad to see it painted rather than varnished. It's hard to paint that beautiful wood grain but I believe paint was more likely back in the day. It also looks to be part of the vehicle rather than a separate unit attached. There are some wonderfully stained or varnished beds out there but I would have painted it too. I like to take pictures of the bare wood as you have to remember the glorious look of the bare wood.
Herb's photo of the street cleaner shows a White truck. The radiator shock absorbers are a distinctive feature White used. It has electric lights that I believe are a little larger than Model T lights. It looks like chain drive which is unusual for Whites.
Thanks
Rich

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
The curl of the front frame horn with the 3 holes is my best clue that it is and International. The 2 at left were called 1910 on the pictures I looked at but the French Front seems more like '15 to '22 models F, G and H.
Your photo could be 1910. Others know much more about Internationals. When did I do that?

Thanks for the identification Rich !
Norm, Coca-Cola historians would know for sure, I'm seeing what's likely twenty four six-ounce bottles in wooden "half shells". They would weigh around forty pounds. Looks like the lading borrows heavily from the way beer kegs were transported.

Grabowsky Motor Coach (a.k.a. GMC) built Rapid brand trucks. They started 4 years before General Motors was founded. GM bought GMC and now say that GMC has a different meaning.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I didn't know that either. This forum is great for that. Thanks Mark.
It got me digging and I'll share these "For What It's Worth".
"General Motors was capitalized by William C. Durant on September 16, 1908, as a holding company. The next day it purchased Buick Motor Company, and rapidly acquired more than twenty companies including Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Oakland Motor Car Company, and McLaughlin of Canada."
"Prior to his acquisition of Buick, Durant had several Ford dealerships."
"A Rapid became the first truck to conquer Pikes Peak in 1909."
My 1907 Buick is #6262 and 1908 started with #6300. I had thought it might have been one of the last Buicks that Buick made but I guess many were made in '08 before it was bought out. Oh well.
I did drive my Speedster up Pike Peak, so the Rapid climb interested me.
"Durant lost control of GM in 1910 to a bankers trust as the deal to buy Ford for $8 million fell through."
"Durant was forced out of the firm by the stockholders and co-founded the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911 with Louis Chevrolet."
Easy come and easy go.
