Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I think that is a two-cylinder, 3/4 ton Model 2 Buick truck. It used the same engine as the Mode F Touring car. 43" x 76" was ample capacity behind the seat for that load of youngsters. Maybe 1911.
What a nice photo to start the new page.

"The original “Bulldog” – a 1915 Mack AC model" was introduced that year "was manufactured continuously through 1938". I don't know if the appearance stayed the same until '38 or not.

Man, that's quite a load to keep balanced!
I would say it's a White truck based on the radiator shock absorbers. Perhaps a 1920s 5 ton.
Thanks

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Perhaps the building is longer aft than it is wide ?? I don't know if that would help with balance ! Most folks think of house movers as a recent innovation, but many buildings were re-located using teams of horses or oxen well over a century ago. I love these photos of the old trucks at work, and it's even more fun with "guides" who can identify the makes and year-models !
(Harking back to the Mack, they looked pretty much like that photo up through 1930 from what I could learn. By 1939 they looked quite modern, I couldn't find images of the interim years.)

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Winternet searches are either fairly definitive or a rabbit hole ! What little I could find that seems to pertain, the wholesaler O. J. DeMoll & Co. was mostly a music wholesaler in Washington, D. C. Sources indicate a 1920 date for the photo. Nothing said about the truck.

Duey's Rhyme...
Excellent photo of number 9!
For some reason, I wish it were mine.
With the hood sides askew and engine in view,
The men gathered there have much work to do.
They deliver their load to the camp's humble abode.
Some work hard, others stand around,
And one sits on the truck with his feet off the ground.
The mission's complete, And everything's fine,
Thanks to the big truck, who's number is 9.

Not very good at Geography. Where is Kingsway, London,W.C.2 ? I have heard of London England and London Ontario. The word Labour indicates an English spelling of the word. When I was on a visit to England, W.C. was what they called the Restroom! Also, what is Shell Mex? Was this a Mexican fuel?

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
While REO was building trucks during that time period that one is built on the car chassis. Looks like a 2-cylinder one.
The trucks were often one-cylinder. Maybe all of them. If you go to the 2nd column of this thread you will see these at the top. They are the 1-cyl.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I believe most of those early single cylinder vehicles had massive displacement. Borrowing on the intuition that a single cylinder was ample for a steam engine, they developed impressive torque, which worked well in those "quick delivery" trucks. Great lineup of Reos ! Thanks, Rich !

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
This is the arrangement of the 1 and 2 cylinder REOs before they went to 4 cyl cars. The fuel and water tanks lived under the hood rather than the engine. The planetary transmission was out in the enements. Buicks, Fords and many others chose this configuration.

There once was a man from Nantucket
He said I know I can truck it
He said with a grin,
while they loaded it in
The hill up ahead will not stop us.
So, he climbed in the cab
Gave the starter a jab
And started the big motor up.
He opened his door
Placed his dog on the floor
Slowly he climbed to the top
When he reached the hills the peak
He said with a shriek
I know this 'ol truck will not stop
The truck raced down the hill,
As he wrote his last will
and yelled goodbye to his friend
With the engine still hot
They dug him a plot
And that's how he met his life's end.

Hi Duey,
Shell-Mex was a joint marketing venture between BP and Shell that ran from 1932 until 1976 when the companies went their own ways again.
The Shell-Mex tanker above looks like a Thornycroft (English heavy truck maker from 1896 to 1977).
Here is another Thornycroft tanker in New Zealand about 1925:

Here is another Thornycroft tanker in New Zealand about 1925:

Thornycrofts are so 'cool' that Peter Jackson even had two modern replicas made (modern running gear) for his WW1 airplane events:

Basque sheepherders, Harney County, Oregon - no date.
A good, solid TT. I figured this photo would be better appreciated on this thread than in general discussion.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Since I don't see any other responses I will suggest it is late teens or early 20s. They seem to look much the same to me. They must have made several sizes and that would be one of the larger ones. Many had a cab and fenders.
Someone will know much more.
That's a heck of a load and leaning a bit. It would have been exciting.
A neat photo and great road.
Thanks for sharing it.

Note there's no runoff ditch plowed on the uphill side. Runoff followed ruts and washed them deeper. I think the rear wheels are in the rut, I hope that load was balanced when hitched on !! Yup. Could have been a thrilling ride downhill !! Thanks for the comments, Rich !

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
I have been wondering about these old logging trucks, on these old photos one hardly ever sees a 'headache rack' , after several nights without sleep i think i have the answer to the question: the brakes were simply not good enough to make the load shift forward, so no problem.
The headache rack came into fashion when brakes started to actually work...

Leo, also - if that load did shift forward, not much would stop it. Speeds were very slow. On a road like that probably never over 15mph.

That's interesting Rich ! Thank you for the pix. Hmm. "GMC - preferred by loggers !"
Herb, probably by gravity - a log dump on an inclune where the load could be skidded sideways onto the truck. In that era individual logs would have been moved around by a team. Just a guess. Others will know better.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
"That's an interesting question Herb. Heinrich looked it up and found that though KD did use and modify them from time to time they were actually invented and brought to use by the Pythagoreans in the 16th century. Kajiabunk Lauwic had attached push string to arrows to retrieve birds from flight. Using a 300 lb bow he and his brother launched one into the stratosphere where it became stuck in a cloud. Using a Smith and Waggnles #14 pulley they snaked a manila rope up to the end where it also remained stuck. Thus the faculty to secure the end of sky hooks. In 1862 Brocks and Trackler formed the largest sky hook manufacturing plant in England just North of Big Ben. Their expertise in raising the big clock each morning was invaluable.
Possibly why you couldn't find one in the shed is that they tended to get away and take the roof off. That is why they seldom are stored there and there lies the joke.
This is not to be confused with the TV show "Sky Hook" discussed on an earlier program. Again, about a civilian pilot with a hook for a hand and his niece Two-pence and their dog Scruffy. They flew the skies apprehending ner-do-wells and misfits for the prize money."
Much ado about it on column 21 of this lengthy inquisition.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Missionary pilots in jungle areas did invent a 'sky hook' technique.
They found that by flying slow tight circles they could lower a rope with a hook (or a pail attached) right to the ground where it was fairly stationary in the middle of the circle (I am sure physicists can explain the forces and things).
In that way they could deliver goods and pick things up, limited by the weight they could hand haul back up to the plane. I guess it really was a skyhook as it literally came hanging for the sky

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Well, this looks like a TT, but as it is period trucking, and it covers 'well loaded' here is a truck grinding up the locally famous steep and winding Paekakariki Hill road sometime around 1924.
Note the spares on the side - quicker than fixing the 'pung' on the hill side I guess.

Here is a similar view, from a similar place on the now sealed hill road. This time around the 1940's:

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
How did they load the logging trucks?
Looking at Rich Eagle's montage just above, the bottom right photo is a clue.
A ramp was made which the truck pulled along side. Cables were put around the log and they were pulled by a winch up the ramp and on to the truck/trailer.
This New Zealand picture shows the process, here the winch is mounted on the truck to the left. Goes to show that you never wasted the old trucks - just used them for something else A (large?) stationary winch was probably used as well.

There was a book "This Was Logging" by Ralph W. Andrews. It may have been in the same series as This Was Trucking that Herb mentioned at the beginning of this wonderful thread. I don't remember having it around but sure it has some great old photos in it.

Found this in my photo album

Nope,
the Boys in the ducting shop thought it would protect the mechanic while he was trying to time the engine. The Owner got wind of it and told them they could use it when working on the truck but it would be removed before going out for display.
I was surprised that no one asked how the American LaFrance hubs were adapted to the Cadillac wheels.Do it right or do it over, your choice. Drive like everyone is out to get you!

Looks like the new Coker tires. Nice but expensive.
Not a truck but where else would I post it?
From Dad's photos a Dodge converted into a pump I believe. The coupe in the background suggest this may be the late '30s.
Likely in Montana as he worked for the USGS at the time.

I never have for what that's worth.
There was a "Casco Products Corporation was founded in 1921 and is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. Casco Products is part of the Amphenol Corporation."
Maybe it was part of that.
It reminds me of a Kissel truck we had locally.

Looking at the Central Brewing Co truck...It would take a hell of a man to load a full barrel of liquid up on top like that and then lift it down when delivered.
The top may cover their heads when it's in the up position, but their legs and feet would get soaked in the rain!
One small headlight under the seat but don't worry they can toot the bulb horn to get everyone out of their way!

It would even take a **** of a man to climb up to the seat and to steer that truck.

Re: This was trucking-Old Photos
Well, it says GMC on the seat but I didn't recognize it. It is much like this one. "1913 GMC 2-Ton pickup truck"
