Canopy Top for TT Cab

Post by AandTman » Tue Feb 21, 2023 1:50 pm

Purchased wood several weeks ago, White Ash, as what is used for the C Cab roof. Followed same pattern as the cab for the Canopy Top, as what little wood I did get with the screen sides, not enough for patterns.

Here is pictures of my C Cab roof before & after installation. It was built from scratch with white oak.

Don - I'll get you a couple photos of my Gramps' 1924 C-Cab Covered Express - all original wood in cab & canopy.

Geo, Steve is going to post some pics of his original canopy top. I also have some pics of one other original canopy top,.......some where. Like I said above, I just followed the same pattern as what is in my roof.

I learned something new today. That is the first time I have ever seen curved top timbers running north and south, with the laths set across the vehicle. I guess it works OK on such a small cab

That top seems to work and is expertly done, but that is not the way Ford did it.

Thanks Jeff, my top works good and the spacing of the north/south ribs align with our heads, you have probably seen me at the Michigan Jamboree.

No, I don’t have the curtain irons. Think that’d make it look too cluttered. Same reason I don’t want a carbide generator on the ‘14. OK purists; so Ford didn’t shellac the C Cab wood.

Here's inside the cab roof & canopy of my Gramps' '24 TT - the rear window was whacked out in the 60's as my siblings & I rode in the back quite often & with six kids in the back, my Mom & dad could keep an eye on us !!! Other than the paint job done in the 60's , the truck was original - Gramps bought it new in Seattle at Wm. O. McKay Ford. I believe my Dad installed the dome light.

Thanks Steve, quite a variation in the wood work, I have seen those corner brackets before, and the hacked out rear window, definitely needed to back up.
Wood all painted, ready to install.

I've noticed differences in the side header on other C-Cabs - my Gramps' has a 12/23 serial number & has the narrow side headers (if that's the proper name ?) and note the others here have the wider side header - can anyone verify why ?

The “low” roof was the earliest design and not made to stow side curtains. I believe this low roof was discontinued in early ‘24. The “high” roof had storage holes and clips for the side curtains. The steel side panels were also notched at the top to accept the cross bows for the low roof. These sides were installed also on later high roof trucks until the inventory of them was used up.

That looks great. I misunderstood that you were installing a canopy over the bed. Will you be installing screen sides? I would like to see a picture of the completed project.
