26/27 fuel tank cap

Post by Will » Tue Oct 14, 2025 8:51 am

Would anyone have a 26/27 fuel cap laying around. I guess I missed placed it. I cant find it anywhere.
As Tom Sellick told Marston in the movie Quigley Down Under, I told you I dont have much use for handguns, I never said I didn't know how to use them!

Thanks John but I'm trying to avoid that $60.00 dollar price tag.

It's a fairly standard thread size. I believe any T fuel cap will fit. An early Fordson fuel cap will fit, so will the radiator cap if you drill a vent hole. You could also use a vented radiator cap from a small English car like a Prefect. As a last resort, a drum bung from a 44 gallon oil drum will fit too.
When I first brought Herietta, my barn find original 1925 buckboard it had a home made version consisting of an internal cross piece, a central threaded bolt, a big leather washer under a steel disc on the outside, and a wingnut to hold it all together.

More proof the cheapest thing in a Model T is the driver. If we don't support the making of new parts, they won't be made any more.

I agree John, Treating the hobby with cheapness is what gets potential buyers or opinionators saying a painted, upholstered, driver with good wheels and tires should sell for 7,000.

Reality is tough.
Its supply & demand. There are a lot of T's coming out of estates & from old guys & little demand for these T's as the hobby shrinks.
I have seen several very nice drivers change hands for $5K, only needing a little service from not running for a decade or two. Really nice, get in it & drives for $7K are easy to find.
I expect to loose a lot of $$ when/if I sell My cars, But I never expected a big profit in $. I have been paid in enjoyment & fellowship.
I just hope when the time comes, they don't go to the scrapper.

I dealt with this all week at Hershey.
Once heard a very knowledgeable person in our hobby say it best.
“If the cure for cancer was being sold at Hershey for $5, a T guy would bitch and say he will find it cheaper on the next row.”

Another example of where a "thumbs up" or "like" button would be great on this forum. I literally laughed out loud when I read this.

If you don't like $60.00, there's an original Ford script one on EBAY for $450.00.

It's on top of a pump somewhere.

The nice thing with the 26/27 cap is even with an almost full tank there isn't any gas escaping through the vent hole and smelling things up. On my speedster, I had some vertical space above the tank so I took a regular brass flat cap I had and drilled the vent hole out to 1/4" then soldered in a 1/4 copper tube that was a few inches long. Probably overkill but I soldered the top of the tube closed and then drilled a 1/16 vent hole through the solder. Simple easy and controlled the gas fume issue. Not sure how much vertical space there would be above the flat cap on a 26/27 but something similar could work. OK, a little futzing around to make the mod but if the extra expense is an issue you have an opportunity to play in the garage a bit. I'd probably buy the right cap but this could be an option.

When I’ve had nice original’26/‘27 gas caps, I generally ask a bit more than the reproductions sell for and they usually sell pretty quick.

I had no idea my gas cap was that valuable.

Old 24/27 gas caps may not be a bargain.

Obtained this one with one ear gone, thought ok still can work.

But after purchase found that the old zinc metal had swelled at the threads and someone must have used a flat file to reduce diameter. Problem is that flattened the threads so won’t fit at all. Maybe a thread file could restore?

Will. If you want this old one to try to fix to fit, email me your snail mail address and it’s yours. Dan

Take it if it is free !

Easily fixed by slowly working into the threaded hole from an old gas tank with a little thinned lapping compound.
