12/2 7:00pm PST Live Stream & ID Help - Unloading a Model T Haul

Post by Matt in California » Tue Dec 02, 2025 8:28 pm

I just picked up a big estate sale haul of Model T parts — everything from scrap to salvageable pieces and some real mystery items. I used to rely on a close friend who knew Model T parts inside and out, but I recently lost him, so I’m hoping for a little help from the community.

I’ll be going live on YouTube in about 1½ hours to unload and sort everything. If you’d like to join in, offer advice, or just hang out, I’d really appreciate it.

I love the handles forged ironwork for the pick-up tray sides. How will the distraction of recording the unload make it easier?

Allan,
I live a couple hours from a Model T club. I enjoyed being connected with others in my insanity:lol:

I didn't get to even pull out the pick-up sides. I need to look at them in part 2!

Mark,
Thanks for sharing this. It looks like the bushings were used on earlier axles. I have another example that I pulled out of an axle used for a trailer. At least with that one there wasn't rust.

This may not be worth much. But I thought it was interesting. Evidently the rollers were made out of wood and swelled upAny one know much about this type of timer?

I can’t imagine having four different contact points, making the ignition system any better. But I have to give them credit for trying :-)

The "brush", point activator is a score. They are often missing. Special to that timer.

That timer is the Fan Steel brand, 1923.

Thanks Dan! This helped me find Jay’s post: https://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/4 ... 26260.html
And I am surprised to hear the testimonials here:

https://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/4 ... 1393359310

The examples that I see here don’t look like wood wheels. Or am I to believe people are using these 100 years later with wood rollers?

Either way all these comments make me want to clean this up and use it, or get a cleaner example so I can spend my time elsewhere.

I’ve had one of those timers on my roadster for 15 trouble free years.

But it doesn’t have wooden rollers.

The wood rollers might be a farmer fix. That looks like a good timer design. New rollers made of Delrin would probably give good service.

Wow!!! How often do you drive? Any idea of what the rollers are made of?

The rollers were made of fiber, over time in wet conditions, as the timer is so rusted, those compressed composite fiber rollers delaminated to look like splintered wood.

From the adv. in the Acc. of the Day post :

Have two marked "Duntley" and Fan Steel Makers" in my "Wall of Timers", the rollers are a dark material, but a bit swollen in shape becoming oblong round, and some won't spin again.

I would guess that in 15 years I’d probably have around 10,000 miles on my roadster pretty easy.

Dan's ad copy states...

I think the statement "needs no oil" might suggest fiber roller wheels, since steel rollers would definitely need oiling. But then, it also states no rolling, which of course is not true, except that there is no rolling contacts perhaps.

It looks like they have some fancy marketing going on. But Andy‘s experience seems to speak well of the design.

Since I got such amazing response on that, here are some of the other items that did not get identified in the first video:

I got these to probably a starter. The bearing has a 1904 patent date.

I don’t know how to tell these from the really early ones. Is there anything special here?

The C over H forge mark indicates it was made by Cleveland Hardware I believe. I found their mark on a few of the forgings on my 1915 Canadian tourer.
