Pesky TT Hubs
Went to a buddy’s shop to use the big shop press to get the TT wheels apart. Getting the hub bolts out took every bit of my might and my 3 foot breaker bar. Still surprised I didn’t strip a single thread or shear one of the bolts. Those things are TOUGH. Even with an acetylene torch and penetrating oil first, it still broke almost every tendon out of the fellows before the outside plate broke free from the hub. Now to make up a jig to press the plates back flat and into shape.

Brad, there is a flange around that plate on the hub. When you apply pressure on the hub, if the plate does not move immediately, what happens is that flange digs deeper, the more pressure is applied, and you will damage something. The trick is to get that plate loose first. That part of the hub protruding through the plate must be cleaned of all paint and rust so the plate has nothing to bind on as it comes off. Then it helps to drive the plate around the hub to break it free of any rust/paint between the plate and hub. A pin punch can be employed for this purpose. The more you drive it to get it free the better. Then park it so a pin punch can be driven through the bolt holes from the back side to drive the plate off. No press needed.

Wheel looks mighty nice to be tearing apart.Was there 1 bad spoke or?

The spokes were garbage after closer inspection. All needed to be taken apart anyway for the respoke. Makes for a lighter box and cheaper shipping. Going a slightly taboo route on these. More to come. The steel fellows will be up for sale soon. Some surface rust but no major pitting.
