Just sold in the classifieds was this planatar shifter. This is the third one I’ve seen, mine included, with a forge weld right here. I’m wondering now if they were made like this? What’s the chance of three having a forge weld in the same place, and none of them dressed down with a grinder?

Hey there Tim!
I had one of those many years ago. It did not have a weld in that spot. I would suspect the cast nature of the whole handle made them prone to break there often.
Just my thoughts.

I think the Planitor shifter is the same design as the shifter for the 3 Speed Rocky Mountain drive line transmission except the RM one has provision for 3 locking positions whereas the Planitor shifter only has two. I sold my RM trans and shifter to Jim Burns down in Texas last year. Possibly Jim can check the shifter and report back. I sort of remember a weld but. . . .
