1926 TT coil location

Post by 70shovelhead » Sun Feb 09, 2020 5:07 pm

My TT is titled 1926 and supposedly the original engine. It came to me with an engine mounted coil box but has an early firewall as seen. Was there a transition period where this could have been correct. If not should I use a firewall mounted coil box. What say the experts?

The 26-27 TT trucks had a lot of 1924-25 features such as hood, fenders, cab, and firewall coil box.

It is my understanding that coil boxes on all TT's were mounted on the firewall, including '26-'27 models.

Henry is correct. ALL TT's stuck with the cowl mounted coilbox until the end.

However, many have found their way to having the engine mounted set up in
the years since.

My first TT was a rougher example of what I have now, but nearly identical. At
some point it had received "an update", with the engine mounted coilbox. From
an ease-of-access perspective, I can see the attraction. But from an underhood
"clutter" perspective, I prefer the cowl location.

What attracts me to TT ownership is the "down-on-the-farm" place they occupied
in a Grapes of Wrath sort of Americana way. Making my TT absolutely as it left the
factory is not near as interesting to me as what one might have looked like after
ten years of use and repairs and "Farmer Brown" upgrades. Someone on this forum
posted a photo here once of a riveted fender patch that was SO cool ! It told such
a wonderful story of Depression era ingenuity and resourcefulness that is so in keeping
with Henry Ford's own frugality and idea behind the Model T in the first place.

What ever you do, do what makes you happy. Some things on my truck I know are
not OEM, but I prefer the old school "fixes", as they tell the story of the truck and
America at large, in a more general sense, from that period when these were just
tools to get a job done.

I think that was my fender patch photo. I'll see if I can find it and post it again.

Brent, you could just go ahead and rivet a patch somewhere on one of your fenders. You know, just for the cool factor. No one will know that there's no crack underneath. Just trying to help. Bob

My fenders have some cracks. I may just have to brush up on my riveting skills
when they get bad enough.
