Are front cross members all the same?

Post by Dennis Prince » Mon Feb 17, 2020 3:03 pm

Need to replace the front cross member on a 27 pick up and I have some older frames that I could get a donor cross member out of if they are the same. Thanks, Dennis

TT's are different from cars. All car front crossmembers should interchange.

Thanks Pete, I thought that they look the same but I knew two sisters that looked the same but they weren't.

Don’t know if the later frames had the Ford script on the front crossmember but the earlier ones did. I didn’t realize the script was on it until I started to clean mine up on my 21. I don’t think it’s stamped anywhere on the frame but on the front. Maybe I just didn’t look close enough.

My 26 chassis has Ford on the front crossmember.
If you can't help em, don't hinder em'

From the encyclopedia:

Beginning about March 19, 1919, the “Ford” logo began to be imprinted on the front cross member.

Beginning in June 1920 the front cross-member was made of heavier steel.

I used the later 1919+ cross member on my 1915 because it was NOS. I suppose I would fill in the Ford logo if it was a show car, but it's not.

26-27 rear crossmembers are supposed to be different because of the lower arched spring. So all fronts from 1919 were the same. I learned something new.

The low eight leaf spring came out in mid 1925, and has nothing to do the front crossmember. It dropped the height of the front of the car one inch, and at the same time added one leaf.

Dennis, The front cross member on the '26 and '27 Ts are different from the '25 and earlier frames. They are made to accommodate the '26-'27 front fender irons. I don't have a picture to show you. But, if you take a close look at the one on your '27 and compare with an earlier one you'll see the obvious difference.

You could use an earlier pre-‘26 front cross member, but would need the left and right fender bracket extensions, and with some modifications re-drill holes in the earlier crossmember and rivet both back in correct place.
