If you have the original metal seat riser, the seat spring sits on the seat riser. The springs actually have a wooden framework attached to the bottom of the seat spring that sits on the riser. The backrest spring, also, has a wooden frame attached to it, in order for it to mount, properly. See pictures Figures 566, 567,568, 576.
