steering arm question
Does the steering/pitman arm fit on a tapered shaft or straight shaft. How much force does it take to tap it off the steering shaft.Thanks.

Re: steering arm question
On the cars I have worked on the steering shaft is tapered and has a woodruff key in it. I have used a puller to remove it. If it is loose enough to tap off, it is too loose.

Re: steering arm question
The parts book shows the same arm for all years, so they are all tapered. I don't have a puller that fits, so I bash them off with a brass drift and a BFH. Sometimes they come off easy, and sometimes they don't.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: steering arm question
The manual says tap it. off. I Suspected it might be a little more than that.
Thanks,John

Re: steering arm question
Heat it up with pen. oil, let cool tap off, seems to work better this way, Bob

Re: steering arm question
While I agree all steering arms appear to have a taper, they are not all the same. I believe the very early Ts with a short steering column use a different angle than later models. I suspect the 1912 torpedo used yet a different design and I suppose the Improved cars yet another.
I didn’t take this picture but two years ago I was very interested in such items and saved a picture from an earlier thread.
