Photograph of a stunt performer in an automobile in the air between two embankments on North Stanton St. Three people on the road below point upward at the car. The city of El Paso TX is visible in the background. The Martin Building is in the far distance on the right side of the street. September 1920. (via The University of North Texas Libraries)

If that is a real event the guy in the car would have a heck of a bruise on his chest or the steering column through his chest when he came down. Or so it seems.

Photo shop, the wheels are not turning. No film in that era would be fast enough to stop them both.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Sure, they could shoot that on a sunny day with a focal plane shutter and a fast lens. But .... it’s combination printing. That stuff is as old as the invention of photography. Just like introducing clouds in photographs when there were none on the original negative.

Every story - and photograph - has a beginning. To be repeated by others. A related earlier article has a similar jump had been successively completed by Daredevil Charles J. Wilson of Chicago in 1922. The affair was the cover story published in the October 1922 “American Automobile Digest.” The magazine was produced by the American Automobile Digest Publishing Co. and later went on to a long run retitled as the “Automobile Digest.” -

Re: Period Picture- Early Photoshop?
The link posted by Rich E even has a "short" comment by me! I like that picture, have seen it at least a dozen times. (Read my comments near the bottom of that link!) I still read "theoldmotor" nearly every day, and sometimes comment there. Much of what they do there is newer than my interests, but nearly every week has something I really like. This past week I identified two model Ts in a photo taken about 1960 of a used car lot! (A '24/'25 coupe and a '13/'14 touting car! Detail in the photo was lousy so that was as close as I could get.)
A number of other people also made good points on that discussion of the "flying" car.
