While working on the speedster engine, I ran into a part I do not remember seeing before. I found some brass magneto magnet spools that were mixed in with the aluminum spools. I do not remember seeing any brass spools before, so I curious what years they were used. I found enough NOS aluminum spools to use as oil slingers on the speedster flywheel. Im not running a magneto in the engine, just the 16 spools. I believe I may have enough NOS brass spools to use instead of the aluminum spools. The brass spools weigh about twice as much as the aluminum spools. So I not really sure which way to go, The spools will go on the other side of the flywheel when I install the ring gear ...

Parts books list them as part No 3257- magneto support- brass, up to late 1921 then the word brass is dropped.

Mid-teens for sure. I checked the encyclopedia and didn't find even as much as what Frank found in the parts books.

Donny you might want to read the post on bolt hardness. Re the grade 8 bolts.

Mark, I have read the posts on bolt hardness. I chose the grade 8 bolts because of the current post of "this is the way we do it" about how Herm rebuilds transmissions. He shows a flywheel with only spools installed for "oil slingers" when the mag is removed. In the photos the bolts appear to be grade 8. The post about bolt hardness also mentions that grade 8 is a good choice for a "static" load. but not so much for a "flexing" load.. I believe using the bolts as I will be using them is a "static" load. I see no "flexing" happening. With all that said a grade 5 should also be more than adequate. I already had the grade 8 bolts so that's what I planned on using......

I think I've seen some real early ones that have no flange on top and bottom.

My 1918 engine has a full set of brass (looks more like bronze) spools. I reused them during the rebuild.
