Gasket making

Post by Playswithbrass » Sat Mar 21, 2020 11:20 am

Running glass bowl stromberg carb and always had a problem with the cork gasket shrinking. Bought BUNA rubber nitrile gasket material and have been busy making a die and then gaskets. Will see how they hold up

Nice job on the die. (For those that don't know, same with using a hole punch) When using it put a sheet of something like the plastic cutting board material under the material you are cutting, which is what you have done.
A piece hard wood would work too. You could also use the cork/BUNA nitrile gasket material, it is pretty shrink proof and holds up to modern gas.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

In my experience, some types of rubber has been adversely affected by gasoline. Don’t be surprised if it swells, becomes misshapen and starts breaking down where it comes into contact with the gasoline. You may want to do an experiment and drop a piece of the gasket material into a jar can of gasoline (with a screw on lid, of course) for awhile to see how it reacts before using it for real in the fuel system. We wouldn’t want your T to become a fire hazard, especially if garaged close to your house. Be careful. Jim Patrick

Jim buna nitrile is according to the manufacture impervious to fuel/greases and ethanol. So fingers crossed, have the gaskets installed, fuel in the carb and am waiting to see what happens.

Mark did not know about the cork/buna,went to the parts store but they knew of nothing go figure.
Back in the early 70's every spring with the hot rods etc running Holley,s you had to regasket because the gaskets would shrink,Holley finally used the material I would suspect you are talking about.Need to find a supplier for sheets of it

Cheers Pete

Be careful about the cork with buna. In the list it said for bulletin boards.
A few months ago I found a deal on rolls of cork with buna. The guy said they were for bulletin boards , but could be used for gaskets. I was looking to buy a couple 750 foot rolls and get the people that are making the paper T gaskets to make some out of the cork. Called the manufacturer, talked with plant manager. He looked up the part number and told me that since it was for bulletin boards not enough buna in them for gaskets.
Just a heads up guys. Dan

I have been using some gasket material from the McMaster gasket assortment set that is about the same thickness as the original Asbestos gaskets were. They apparently don't sell it separately but it is vegetable fiber who it is impervious to alcohols.

I cut them on a gasket cutter and save the center cuts for making other small gaskets.

You can also use lead if you have 1/16 sheet, thicker will not compress well, in my experience.
