I worked for my Father for 37 years in a family business that we sold in 2014, so now I am retired. I started working for him after 4 1/2 years in the Marine Corps so I always had a can do attitude. For the entire time I worked for him, whenever I would present him with a groundbreaking idea, he would invariably and reflexively tell me why it could not be done before even giving it any consideration. I would always tell him: “Don’t tell a Marine why something can’t be done, tell me how it can be done”. When we sold the company, it was sold for much less than it would have been sold for had it been more successful, which I knew it was capable of, had we been more bold in our vision. There is no telling where our little company would have ended up, had my Father been a can do type of President rather than a can’t do type. Unfortunately, as bad as it sounds, I ended up losing respect for him and started to think of him as a coward. Jim Patrick

I’ve tried to live by these. I especially like the last quote.

I used to live by the adage:

"Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach".

Of course that was before I became a "Training Instructor". HA! I can teach you 100 how not to accomplish the task because I have already attempted those 100.

I think of this as a positive, "when the going gets tough..." statement. "The sight of the gallows wonderfully concentrates the mind." Samuel Johnson ca.1750

For me, there is nothing like the satisfaction of fixing something that most other people these days probably would have just discarded and gone out and bought a new one. I've got to make the attempt to fix the old one first. It's in my blood. If I spend fifty bucks on parts and twenty bucks on a tool I need to do the job and save the one hundred dollars it would have cost to have it fixed or to buy a new one its like getting thirty dollars free to spend as I want and new tools to boot. Win-win. And I get to tear something apart to see how it works. win-win-win. Nothing is every broken. It just hasn't been fixed yet.

Back when I was the Facilities Manager at a local school, I was thrust into one challenge after another.
I loved it. Most of 'em anyway. The challenge of also dealing with the public was probably the worst!
But one thing it taught me, was to never back down from a challenge. Still don't. I don't like losing.
I lived pretty much by Edison's 3rd and 4th quote submitted by "the other Tim"!! Thanks Henry and Tim!!

Those who are afraid to try, are afraid to lose. Those who are afraid to lose, are afraid of life. True advances are made by those bold enough to embrace life and it’s uncertainties. During his time, Babe Ruth held the record for home runs. He also held the record for strikeouts. You can’t reach the top without trying. Jim Patrick

"You only live once, but if you live right, once is enough."

"Be what you is, 'cause if you be what you ain't, you ain't what you is."

My Great Grandmother had what looked like a page from a book (appears to be a page number in the corner) in a frame. I think it is part of a poem, but there is no author noted. I have always remembered it. It said;

"Somebody said that it couldn't be done. But He, with a chuckle, replied that maybe it couldn't, but He would be one who wouldn't say so until he tried. If He worried, he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing that couldn't be done, and He did it.
