Hello:
I am working on a 1927 coupe and have the windshield and closed body glass specifications & sizes manual but it does not say anything about the glass thickness. I was wondering if anyone could provide the thickness.

I used 1/4'' in my 24 tudor.

Steve , I got my window run channels from Langs and they work well with 1/4 '' glass. when you get your glass cut get a slight bevel at the bottom and a good polish job on the edges to insure a smooth working up and down . Ken

Why would you use tempered glass in a windshield? That should be laminated safety glass.

Am I losing it? I could swear what I have in my cars is 3/16" safety glass, which is still thicker than the original.

I have a 1926 coupe with the two piece windshield frame with the hinged top rail that separates from the lower 3 sided frame into which the glass slides. When I had my windshield cut out of safety glass at a local glass shop, I discovered that the stock cork gaskets could not be used if the 1/4” glass is used (too tight). If you measure the original plate glass you will find it is less than 1/4”, around 7/32” or so which is not available in safety glass. In order to slide the 1/4” glass into the channel, I discarded the cork gaskets and purchased a can of the Right Stuff and centered the glass in the frame with wooden wedges and applied a few dabs the Right Stuff to each side of the channel in several places. Once the dabs of the Right Stuff cured, I removed the wedges and applied a continuous bead of the Right Stuff to both sides of the glass, squeezing it deep into the channel on both sides, taking care not to get the Right Stuff in the channel into which the tabs of the top rail go. When it cured, I installed the top rail,screwing it in place at both top corners and applied the Right Stuff to both sides of the channel across the top. Once the Right stuff has totally cured, attach the hinge of the completed windshield onto the body, you can trim the cured rubber flush with the channel on each side of the glass. It looks great and is totally waterproof. Jim Patrick

It is illegal to use tempered glass in a windshield where I live

WHY WOULD ANYONE USE TEMPERED GLASS IN A WINDSHIELD!!!!! Don’t you understand the damage and possible pain of all the glass pieces could cause you or a passenger in an accident or a stone hitting the windshield? I can’t believe anyone would use tempered glass in a windshield! USE SAFTEY GLASS ONLY!

I used 3/16 safety glass for a windshield. Seemed close to the original size. The last thing a T needs is extra weight

I don't know what kind of glass is in my windshield. How do I tell if I have safety or tempered? My uncle had the glass installed in the '90s but he's no longer with us.

If it was done in the 90's it should be safety glass. If you look at the edge of the glass it should have a very thin line down the middle. It is sometimes hard to see especially if the edge has been rounded.

I was careless in storing my windshield glass when I bought my 25 from Kim Dobbins in California
and hauled it back to Tucson. The lower panel was broken when I arrived home.
I took the broken piece to a glass shop and they made a replacement using safety glass.
It has developed a crack and is either to large or to thick. when it warms up a little today I
am going to measure the thickness.
