Hi all,

I recently inherited my late grandfather's 1922 Center Door Sedan, and am having a blast learning about it, driving it, and caring for it. Unfortunately, it's developed a fuel leak somewhere in the area of the gas tank, and I suspect the leak is coming from the tank itself due to the significant amount of rust I have observed inside the tank. In the interests of playing it safe, I've decided to replace everything in the fuel system rear of the carburetor, but I've been struggling to identify the correct tank to order.

MAC's lists the part, but says it's discontinued. P/N: T2900 BN, OEM P/N: T2900B

Lang's lists the part, but is giving a 6 MONTH LEAD TIME to order. They are also using a totally different part number than MAC's. P/N: 2900TD

Smith & Jones shows the part as being available, but is also using a different part number. P/N: T-2900 F

Snyder's lumps the listings for all of their model T fuel tanks together, but again confirms the par number being used by Smith & Jones as the correct part for sedans, T-2900 F

Thoughts? I'm leaning on ordering the part from Snyder's, but am confused by the conflicting part numbers cited by other retailers. Also, if anyone knows of repair guides for a tank replacement on a sedan, I would love the guidance.

Give them your measurements and picture of your tank. Send it to their parts dept. Then ask them to match it. I would think they would do that. I would try Snyder’s or Lang’s first and in no paticular order. Both and the others handle T parts but I would try them first. Hope this can help but that’s what would do.

Well, I have located the official parts manual and have answered at least one of my questions- 2900B is the original part number, and the numbers 2900TD and T-2900 F never seem to have been used by Ford.


Is it safe to assume then that those are numbers used for remake parts of the original 2900B?

I thought they are square and go under the passenger seat ? Looks similar to the 2900B

The center door tanks are square and under the driver's seat in the seat base. Early center doors had them under the rear seat originally. I have seen both the tapered top and the flat top. We have a flat top in our 1920 center door. Sorry I can not validate any part numbers.

Our '19 has the tapered square as shown in the parts book.

My '22 Centerdoor has the flat top. But assuming the highest part of the sloped tank is the same height as the flat top tank it should work just fine. The tank is a tight fit so the recommendation that you take measurements and have them checked against a new tank is good advice.

Thanks to all for your replies. I guess I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I know the shape and location of the tank (I've had to put gas in it!), I'm just trying to reconcile the difference between the various part numbers referenced by retailers, and understand if all Model T gas tanks manufactured to the shape of the 2900-B tank pictured are made with the same dimensions and specs, or if there is some variation across model years and trims other than the obvious "you can't put a cowl tank or roadster tank under your seat".

I think most of the vendors use the first part of the Ford number followed by a letter or/and number for their own inventory purposes. There was a time when Ford (Motor Co.) claimed possession of the parts book numbers and vendors had to invent their own, but that seems to have been resolved. Likely the tanks all come from the same manufacturer.

In your original post you stated that you wanted to order a new tank since your original needed to be replaced. The important thing is to get one that’s the same dimension as yours so it will fit regardless of the part no’s. And if there’s any question, dimensions would be the guide to follow and not part no’s.
The vendors do the best they can in supplying the right parts and number them. Hopefully they have tried to do that with gas tanks. Good luck in your quest.
