1913 Pin stripe
I was wondering on the very early 1913 touring cars was the pin striping just on the body? Or was it also on the hood and or fenders?
Thanks

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
The early 1913 bodies had pin striping and may have had striping on the hood. No striping on the fenders. I hope this helps. Russ Furstnow

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Thanks Russ, I like the idea of the hood even if it wasn't done in 1913. I should have the body back, painted and striped in a few weeks.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
I have found no evidence of pin striping on my cars, except on the wheels. This is only a GUESS, but I don't believe bodies were striped after the 1912 calendar year.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
My Jan. 13 Touring has almost no paint left on the body but it looks like some evidence would be left behind if it had stripes and so far I can not find anything on it. If I were to restore the car it might show up because the surface rust would not be as deep where the stripe layer was like it did on my 25 Indiana Truck when I sanded it down to bare metal. I knew the truck had a stripe because it was still there before I sanded it but it still showed up in the metal after all paint was removed. I don't plan to restore the 13 at this point but if I ever do this is one thing I will be looking for. Till then, I plan to inspect this car very close up when time permits and see if anything shows up.
Because of this I would have to agree with Larry on this.
I would like to know if any stripes would have been on the back of the front seat or on the seat riser front panel of the front and or rear seats as mine still has paint in these areas.

Give an old car guy a barn and he won't throw anything away.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
I harvested this picture of this pinstriped Canadian 1913 touring off of the interweb.
There is a pinstripe on the back of the front seat but only to the top of the body. The hood is not striped. If a hood is striped, the pinstripe goes vertically along the radiator all the way to the center hinge, along side of the center hinge to the firewall, then all the way back down to the bottom, just like on Russ' car. There should be no "boxes" on the hood. By late 1911 there was no pinstripe on the heel panels.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
My September/October of 1912 Canadian built 1913 was pinstriped and you could still see what was left of it in 1989. How do I know? I saw it myself growing up with this car! here it is in 1929

I know this will not make Larry happy, but here is an original photo of a 1913 touring with a 1913 California license plate. It sure look like it has pin striping on the body! Russ Furstnow

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Can someone identify for me the carbide generator in the photo that Keith posted. Many thanks!

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Sorry Darren, I can't identify that generator.
I wanted to thank Russ for the image of the 1913 from the rear. There are very few images of pinstripe from the back.
Here is the same image, but I have enhanced the contrast a little to bring out more detail:
Click on the image to see it better.
I wonder what the stripe looks like at the bottom of the 1/4 panels and the back panel. What does yours look like, Russ?
I also wonder about the "screen" behind the license plate...

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
I may have more 1913 touring and runabout photos than anyone in the club. It appears to me the Canadian cars were most likely stripped longer than the USA cars, but that is only a guess. I have lots of photos with striping, but lots more without, including a brand new touring with the shipping tags on it with no striping.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Here is another photograph of the 1913 "California 88655" car Russ first posted above.
Seems to have a set of Black & Brass "John Brown 19 style" headlamps that have been electrified.
The front fenders may be the short bill early style as well.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Much like robe rails, prestolite tanks, and treaded tires, Ford dealerships of 1913 were happy to load up new owners with as many accessories and services as they could sell. I think it probable that pin stripes were one such service. Would be curious whether Ford provided dealerships with service bulletins showing recommended striping schematics.

Scott

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
this coming week, Jim Brandt of Model A striping fame will be visiting me here in NH to stripe my 1913 touring in preparation for the AACA Grand Nationals.. (maybe). This car is engine #278034, May, 1913. Should I only stripe the wheels, only the spokes, what color?
Thanks!

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Interesting question. Past discussion http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/59 ... 1483037884
This article says "This wonderful photo shows a very early 1913 touring equipped with an impressive aftermarket electric headlamp and cowl lamp system. We know it is an earlier car because it has pin striping on the body (and probably the wheels). Ford eliminated pin striping at the factory in 1913 model year. Dealers may have added pin striping if the customer wanted it. Also notice the windshield hinge screws are brass plated." https://modeltfordfix.com/the-1913-model-t-ford/
References stripe color (French gray) and when discontinued http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/11 ... 1280676257
Many period photos for 1913 show no pin striping on the body. The few that do show just the body no hood. All look like the wheels were done. https://www.google.com/search?q=1913+mo ... ztUjl7qnfM
Also several references to this design for the wheels - was seen in several period photos.
This is a late 1912 pin striped wheel from a photo of a brand new car with Henry Ford driving. The photo is property of the Henry Ford Museum used under license.

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Re: 1913 Pin stripe
Stripe the body and wheels only, nothing else for 1913. Striping in French gray.
Body striping outlines the panels of the body. Wheel striping runs around the rims and in V darts on the spokes.
