26 Transmission Drum Wiggle

Post by MN_Ford_Fan » Fri Apr 24, 2020 9:16 pm

After finding a piece of lug shoe stuck to my magnets, I broke down the transmission to get a look. Sure enough, 1 shoe gone and all but 1 damaged in some fashion. I noticed while spinning the hubs to get a look at the gears, with the assembly sitting in the position shown in the pic, the reverse drum would brush the gears creating a soft scraping sound. So I grabbed the whole drum assembly and gave it a wiggle and it has some slop. If I deflect it in one direction, the gear set below also deflects out of its plane. I can do this around the drums to each gear set. Is it normal to have this type of "slop" in this orientation and at this level of disassembly? Or do I need to keep going?

It appears the transmission / flywheel is not bolted to a crankshaft. If so, there is nothing holding the trans main shaft in alignment and positioned properly with the flywheel, so yes it normal.

Mike Bender recommends you work on the trans with it bolted to the engine on an engine stand. Makes it easier to check for runout with a dial gauge etc.
He makes the good point that the factory had separate shops for engine and trans assembly, we restorers are only doing one at a time. Instead of heaving a complete trans on and off to set the gap, you do it with flywheel alone, bolt that up and then assemble the trans in situ. Check out his trans rebuild videos on YouTube.

Normal, but as long as you are this far, I'd tear it down to inspect everything.

I agree completely. While you have the transmission out, I would fully disassemble it and check it's condition. Rarely will you find a transmission that does not have something wrong with it.

Install the driving plate and see if the problem disappears.

Richard- bolting on the driven plate will do nothing to stop the man shaft flange from flopping around in the flywheel.

I had a flywheel mandrel machined for doing transmission assembly & setting the magnets.
