I love these photos. The second one looks like the driver side front tire has been cut by the rim but still holding air.

I'm glad you made that observation on the 2nd photo. That is really interesting to see, but what I think is really happening is that is a tire OVER a tire. Blow up the photo and look real hard and see if you don't agree.
I am always amazed and impressed by ingenuity displayed in those times. Inspiration borne from desperation and necessity...I just hope we're not headed toward this today.
