21" Split Rims
Does any one have any experience with reproduction 21" split rims? How well are they made? Are there more than one manufacture? Or, are all of the venders selling the same rim? How do they compare to original rims in in form and design?

Hi Scott,
I have used them in the past --back in the 90s , and were very pleased with them . I believe Mclearan mfg were making them. Top notch!

Who's still makes these gaskets, I might be in the market for a solid copper one myself.

Re: 21" Split Rims
I emailed them a few days ago and have not received any replies yet. Does anyone have any pictures of their rims?

Good luck getting ahold of them. I e-mailed and called several times to no avail. I just repaired my original rims.

Re: 21" Split Rims
Scott,
I purchased two from one of the popular suppliers a few years back and it was disappointing. A little bit
of attention to detail and quality could have made them perfect! The finish and material used is 100%
The issues were... 4 Lugs were welded on and the excess weld is exactly where the Tyre sits, so needed cleaning up
quite a bit. Good idea not to show the welding on the outer but could have easily been altered.
The Latch arm and corresponding threaded hole were on the incorrect side of the Valve Hole or Valve hole drilled
incorrectly. This issue didn’t allow you to collapse the rime enough to fit the Tube.
Last but not lease, the joining faces were cut at an angle to the Rim and not at right angles as per the originals.
For me in Australia and having Canadian Style Hayes Rims on my 26 T the 4 small holes in those used to spread the rim
with the special tool were missing. The manufacturer could have supplied a supplementary pattern or drawing
with instructions on adding the holes.
I managed to get around these issues and have no problem with them since

Re: 21" Split Rims
Another alternative is to post a want ad here in the classifieds for a good, original, used one.
I know that a few guys here have pretty substantial piles of them. I've only been in the Model T hobby for a few years and have a couple extra really nice ones that I've placed in my "doomsday parts" pile.

Re: 21" Split Rims
I would rather have good original rims. I have posted a couple of times looking for good used ones and no one has offered to sell me any good ones. That is why I am inquiring about the reproductions. Are the ones that Snyder sells made by McLaren, or some one else? How well are they made? I still have not received any reply from McLaren. The pictures online, both Snyder and Malaren, do not look like the right rims? Maybe just a generic pictures?

Re: 21" Split Rims
I contacted Snyder's and the ones that they sell are made by McLaren. However they do not have any and have not been able to get any for about a year. Also, no updates from McLaren to them either.
So, I guess I will try another add in the classified section.

Re: 21" Split Rims
If McClaren isn’t producing right now... Coker Tire deals rims made in New Zealand... not sure if they offer a 21” split rim, but the NZ 23” clinchers and lock ring rims are very nice

Re: 21" Split Rims
I just read in another thread that American Vintage Rims, AKA Mark McLaren is out of business.
That link to Coker states that they are made to order by Standweld. Is that the New Zealand Company?

Re: 21" Split Rims
Standweld...? I’ve never come across that name as a vendor... unless they were referring to the original era design/manufacturer...? The fella in NZ is Vintage Rims NZ. I’m not aware of any connection to the Vintage Rims AU.
Having ordered from NZ a few times... by the time you pay the freight and import duties, it would have been cheaper and quicker to order from Coker

Re: 21" Split Rims
No connection between N Z and Australian businesses. The Australian manufacturer is Steven Hood of Kingaroy, Queensland Australia.
Steven does a top quality product.

Re: 21" Split Rims
I contacted Steve Hood and he sent me some picture of one of his wheels. He sells them in plain steel for $275 AUD. For zinc plated add an additional $30 AUD per rim. Shipping is $104 AUD one rim, $250 AUD 4 rims. The exchange rate is 1.43 AUD to 1 USD. Lead time is 4-6 weeks.
