About to be on the road again - 1910 Ford racer

Post by Rob » Fri Jun 05, 2020 10:27 pm

Our 300 cu in motor is almost finished. Tony Schafers, lead instructor at our local college took on the motor after some damage last summer. This is how it looks now. Awaiting the headgasket, then back together and into the car. We’ve had tremendous support with this project, from Fawcett Restoration in Canada, Dean Yoder, Mike Vaughn and Bruce Van Slone with electrical and transmission, and Ben at No Coast Custom and Rod. Stan Howe rebuilt the big five ball carb, and we’re about to put it on the road again.

Such a big beautifull beast that motor...
were those extra oil lines an original fixture or did you add them for safety ?
Thanks for sharing the pictures !

What happened to it last summer that caused it to be worked on again?

That engine looks beautiful and I'll bet that it'll run even better. Can't wait to see and hear it run!

Thanks guys. Yes, Dave, amazing shop.

I think I overheated the motor last summer, and there was scoring on the pistons and cylinder walls. Fortunately we were able to hone the cylinders, but needed new pistons. When Tony got into the motor, the crankshaft also didn’t turn well (videos below) and was binding. The shaft was straight and the bearings were fitted, but evidently not in line. He did a little sanding and brought everything into line.

Now Rob. Was that a test to see if we noticed in the first video that you tightened the nuts on the bearings too tight and forgot the shims, and then you left off the bearings and nuts in the second video so it would spin so well? Everything looks so nice and clean. Does Tony scrub that shop down every night?

"Cool" seems inadequate, as do "Neat" and "Impressive".

Stopped in today to check on a few things. Pics include the 09 style waterpump, magneto drive with dual spark Bosch mag and deflector shield over auxiliary exhaust ports:

That's going to make your K roadster seem downright wimpy and boring. You may need to unload it on someone who appreciates wimpy and boring. Me, for instance.

I want to know where you found the dual spark Bosch... all the dual spark goodies are getting hard to find any more, even the formerly somewhat common Delco Dual Distributor setups aren't easy to put ones hands on.

Gil, nice try.......... 8-)

Susanne, the dual spark was with the motor/project. It’s similar to the one on the 410 cubic inch Ford Special racer at THF. I don’t know if it was with the motor originally, or found and added to the project at some point in time.

Bud, the motor was balanced by Fawcett restoration last year. We only honed and replaced pistons and rings, so hopefully everything is still in balance. We shall soon see...........
