Thanks to a father that collects everything, I became the caretaker of this piece. It wasn't free if you know my Dad!

Interesting with the script and only the numeral 1. Intrigued on use.

It seems to have 'Z' tool markings like Ford factory tools. Bruce's CD listing goes to 54 Z for a dealer part.


Only a guess is that dealer used it for blank engine blocks, and the Ford was there to prove genuine, and the 1 as by late dates, all T engine serial #'s began with a 1.


On this factory photo of the 10th million T, you can just make out similar 'Z' tool markings on the shank of single stamp the operator is using. Makes it a real Ford tool to have those markings ;)

From the stamping on this tool, and the aged finish, would believe it to be a real Ford part from Model T era.

Has 'Z' tool coding, known for Model T parts, and the DET. would be 'determiner', then the '1', meaning the first numeral of a serial number, and the last stamping confirms...... 'T.S", for T stamp or serial

My first thoughts also Dan. But it's very small. The hole on the brass plate is only 1/4" with a screw taper.
It would only cover the space of the width of the stud hole in your picture.

Thanks Duey! I'm sure you can appreciate the "it wasn't free" comment! I'm hoping Dan or someone can bird dog out the original purpose.
Dad got it in Florida this winter. I got the whole "I probably paid to much for this, but if I can get my money back out of it I'd be okay with that" !

I'm thinking it is a stamp to mark factory tool room tools.(maybe tool room department #1) ?? I have several common hand tools that are marked wth a small FORD script that appear to be hand stamped.. Things like hammers,pipe wrenches, chiseled, ECT. Factory tool room tools were marked to help prevent tool theft.
I have a stamp similar to this one. It has no z numbers on It. But it is a reverse mirror image stamp of the Ford script. In other words, if you use it to stamp something it reads as a mirror image. I think it is meant to stamp all the way thru thin sheet metal and be read on the opposite side as a raised FORD script. Maybe on brass headlights, horns, ????. I'm out camping right now, but ill try and post a photo of it when I get home..

On the GPW Jeeps built by Ford in WW2 all, yes litterally all parts were stamped with the Ford script, in various sizes, it might well date from that period too...
I think the stamps on the side of the shank are a bit too modern to be T era.
When in trouble, do not fear, blame the second engineer ! 8-)

I've been holding back just because....

That stamp was "issued" by FMC to it's licensed people in the 20's... what it does is make the parts you want to pretend they are authentic approved parts, and yes, Ford would die to get all those back... OTOH, IF you can follow Ford's vintage prints and make those parts better than original, they'll maybe let you keep it for the same royalty it was originally sold for...

It's a HUGE can of worms, as if Ford gets something you've stamped with this (yes, 100 years after the fact, as they still OWN the trademark for that stamp) they can (and will) take you to the carpet. You could turn it back over to FMC, who still OWNS that Wills Script Stamp, and lose everything... Make everything you produce dead exact to the FMC Prints...

You may think it's supercool and valuable, but knowing that stamp, it could really get someone in deep doodoo... because Ford will come after you for using it.
