Post by Matt in California » Tue Jun 23, 2020 1:19 pm

Has anyone see or used one of these?

I image they must not have been too good or we would see more.

I have one in a box. A local 14 roadster pickup has one. Thing is if it backfires while you a pull starting you may end up in front of the car! Just jokin'

OOPS I have to take that back, I thought it was one of the pull starters that has a D shaped handle on the firewall for you to pull on.

I actually had one on one of dad's cars years ago, but you need Schwarzenegger arms to pull it, or have cruddy compression. Unless you're relying on a hot engine and semi-free starts, that pull starter is NOT like starting your lawn mower, it's tough! WAY easier just to get out and crank it!

Here's another version of pull chain mechanical starter from the dash.

Love the name......very appropriate.......think it would be a challenge to pull that handle sitting down behind the steering wheel

Using this type of starter is no trouble at all!
You just get the mother-in-law to put the heave to it.
The only drawback I see is that since I paid $5 for the car in the first place, it's now only worth $15. That's kind of a disappointing return on investment. Plus, the thing itself cost me $4.75. So now the car is still worth only $10.25.
Well, $10.40, if you count the nickels I hammered in as freeze plugs.

In todays world, that add would most likely be open for a lawsuit. That doesn't look like a "self starter" to me. Dave

I did a an internet search and found several similar devices marketed at that time. Some with good leverage for starting - not sure how they handled kick-back.

VARIATIONS- The Hunter Model T starter

Post by Dropacent » Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:38 pm

Variations of same theme. I’m going to use the bottom one on a project, the top one is available to a tinkerer. I’ve seen a foot-lever-from-the-seat design that intrigues me. Two repaired shoulders here.

I have a couple of different remote starters.
One is interesting in that it is a kick starter.
The starter is similar in shape to the existing pedals.
Makes the T a four pedal car!!

Something tells me that only Mrs. Henry Ford could have persuaded Henry to install electric starters on all Model Ts in 1919.
