In the past I have just turned the rim so that one of the lugs lined up with the lower “keeper” on the carrier. But now I actually have to use it the correct way to allow room for an accessory tail / stop light. So I can seem to figure out how the outer clamp is supposed to fit. I have two clamps. Anyone out there who could supply me with pictures of the carrier with the clamp off and in place?

First you need the bolt in the square hole. Bolt has a square to match square hole.
Next line up the notch with the notch.
Last put pad lock in the spare, empty hole.
Forgot, put nut on bolt in square hole to hold the latch on.

Any pictures? Nothing lines up or clamps on the rim.

Here's mine. I don't guarantee that all is correct. I suspect there may be a piece missing.

I'm learning too - Would it go on like picture below Having the rolled edge on the rim with bolt through the square hole and large round hole of the clamp. The lock through the smaller one. Not using any lug holes

Yes Steve .... that’s how I’ve always used mine but with the accessory Slow/ Stop tail light installed on this carrier I need to used the clamp the way it was designed.

Here's the way to use the spare carrier with rim clamp for the demountable rim.

First place the demountable rim and tire so that the tire valve is straight up at the top of the carrier, looks the best that way, the demountable rim lugs aren't used for the mounting clamp.

Clamp on the carrier, it has two holes, and the lower one uses a carriage bolt, same size thread as rim bolt.

Now place the rim clamp so the bent edge is over the rim edge and the larger hole goes over the carriage bolt or lug.

Thread on the nut, use a lug nut so the same wrench for the rims will remove the spare rim.
Now, to keep your spare tire safe from rascals and goons, apply your padlock to the clamp, one clasp into the hole above, the other side of the clasp rides in that upper notch. .

Just go to show, pictures are worth a thousand words. Dan you need to find a Ford lock made for that job. Dan

Maybe should up grade to a better lock, like a Slaymaker, Elgin, or Yale

I haven't researched this, but I would guess they supplied the lock along with the carrier. If so, there should be some around.

Nope, no p/n # list by Ford for a small size pad lock of proper dia. clasp to fit the spare rim clamp.

You know they didn't, as from the factory you only got a spare rim, no new 5th spare tire and tube! Why lock a rim, the lock was to save the $$$ tire

One thing I don't think anyone mentioned. The tire valve should be as close to the top as you can get it so that rain doesn't get into the rim.Norm

If you put a valve cap on the tube, and or dust cover, how is water going to get in? I like putting the tire valve on top however.

Thanks Dan, That was exactly what I was looking for and I think a few others were schooled as well on this one.

Ok .. I found that the geometry worked better with a spacer where the bolt goes through the bottom holes of the stationary and movable clamp, so I installed a cut down band spring. Works nicely. I believe the nut probably had a wide flat integral washer rather than the taper but I don’t know. Now I need to find the right size vintage padlock.

Yes Mark - the nut should have a flat shoulder. It appears as though you don't have the rim pushed onto the holder far enough - you can see the "tattle-tale" where the paint is rubbed off the rim - it was there once before !

The paint is rubbed off from when it was attached to my side mount. (See picture) But it’s really tight on this tear bracket for some reason. Maybe I need to grease it up and whack it with a rubber mallet.
