Making Holley G floats

Post by Allan » Sat Jul 18, 2020 3:26 am

I have a slug of the black stuff the vendors sell for the purpose, but I am looking for guidance on how to work with it. I have a lathe. I have some expanding mandrels to take emery cloth cylinders like a drum sander. I have a band saw, and a Dremel kit. What else might I need and how should it be used?

Stuff I have is a sort of “foam”, very easy to form, and a wee bit fragile, actually. It’s easy to shape by hand with a fine saw and sandpaper. Perhaps there’s more than one species of synthetic float material ?

Allan; I think Stan Howe is making 2 floats for me out of that same material for two U & J carbies I sent him. Contact him. Hes very helpful albeit long winded 😁
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

Snyder's list a float for the Holly G, I bought one several years ago for my bronze/brass G, their listing list for 1918-20 (steel body) but it worked fine in my carb. The only thing is the nuts on the screws can loosen up so I would add a drop of solder to each once you hinge is
to the new float assembled. price $14.95 T-6102G

I think it is this one you are talking about.

I not only use it in the holley G carburetor. I take it as base to build other floats as I can't find the right one. It is an easy material that gives good results but while grinding and sculpting it to fit you need to wear a mask.

Last time I used it was for the rebuild of the float for a four balls kingston

i have been using the black ring as per the previous post for years and not had a bit of trouble with my Holley G. I was unaware of the screws loosening and haven't had that problem yet. However, that makes me think to buy new brass screws from the bolt depot and replace the original screws.
