Buffalo Wheels

I recently purchased a lovely set of 5 Buffalo wheels and hubs/caps.
The caps look nickel plated.
The wrench supplied with them is like a flat piece of steel approx a foot long with two lugs protruding that fit into the holes on the cap which obviously operates the internal locking mechanism.
Previously I have seen knock on caps with the wings or caps that you would use a wrench.
I havnt seen this style of cap before and wondered if anyone could shed some light on them.
Thanks in advance.

The pin drive caps are a typical earlier design for the Buffalo/House wire wheels. They were replaced sometime about ‘22. There were both cast iron and brass variations of these pin drive caps, and each had their own medallion design

Thank you yes they are great.
My caps are in excellent condition but the face didn’t have any decal or a recess for one.

There is a sight recess near the outer perimeter of your caps to accept the thin sheet metal medallion. If the brass caps are similar design to the iron caps (I don’t have any brass caps to confirm), the medallion should be held on by the same 2 rivets that capture the latching mechanism.

Your rivet holes may have been covered up during the plating process...? Not sure if anybody is reproducing the medallions either...?

The medallion for the center was reproduced at some point. I bought a set from one of the regular suppliers about 15 hears ago.... I don't remember which one. They weren't in their catalog, but on a phone call they remembered having some in a drawer somewhere, They called back and advised they had both the left and right. No idea where they got them or who made them. The only issue was they were flat, and they needed to be pressed into a "dome" to follow the curve of the cap. I made a jig to form the curve and they fit perfectly. So somebody out there probably has a set or two stashed away somewhere.
