New Axles with cotter pin hole in wrong place

I got the entire drive line of my '27 re-built, and I noticed when I put the rear wheels back on, that the cotter pin holes to lock the castle nuts on the tapered end of the new (2505HS) axles were in the wrong place. The old axles had the holes about 3/8" from the end of the thread,l and the new ones have a hole at about 3/4". The nuts cover up the holes. This is something that's hard to notice early on.
Can I drill new holes for cotter pins? Thanks,

The axle is hardened so drilling new 5/32” hole is difficult.

Make sure your hub is fully seated too. Might be hung on the axle key or something .

One fix is to grind the face of the axle nut to align cotter hole.

Am now putting new axles in rear end, these are new mfg. GN brand. The cotter hole location is to Ford print. .875” from end of taper. Puts centerline of cotter hole .234” from axle end as per Ford print.

It turns out that I am wrong. there is a hole in the correct place. I think that there are two holes for some reason. All is well. J.R.
