Is there a way of removing the pinion edit:**gear** without taking the U-joint off? The drive shaft and tube are off the differential but as far as I know I am unable to fit a puller jaws onto it not enough room and the slam it on a piece of wood maneuver isn't going to work because the U-joint will prevent the slide hammer action of the tube. Is there a way to get it off under these circumstances?

Ignatio, if you have a second U joint of any condition, put it onto the mounted joint and hold the square end in a vice. That way the driveshaft is held captive and you can use whatever wrench to undo the pinion nut.

Pardon my ignorance Allan (people have to do that all the time) but why the need of a second U Joint ? I’ve placed the attached U Joint square end in a vise and supported the shaft and tube then used whatever wrench

In the OP, " I am unable to fit a puller jaws onto it not enough room" suggests difficulty pulling the pinion. I'm curious how that might be accomplished. Never tried that without first removing u-joint and drive tube. regards, jb

Place the square u joint end in one jaw of your Dixie Service Station Equipment axle stand and tighten the jaw to hold the drive shaft. Let the DS tube rest in other jaw of said stand, tighten to hold tube steady.
This will let you remove split pin on pinion nut and remove said nut.
Then slide DS out of tube.
Then you can remove u joint.

I guess you could use a KRW stand. I like the Dixie stand because you can fold up the support so it is out of the way.

Egads I mispoke. The pinion nut is off, the pinion GEAR I meant to say is what I want off. I don't want to take the U-joint off because this differential doesn't belong to me and it has to go back to the owner and I would rather leave the U-joint on if I can get away with it.

Is something wrong with the gear or bearing? Otherwise why do you want to remove the gear?
A regular puller should fit behind the gear with a screw to tighten the puller. Not the sliding hammer type puller. Once the gear starts to move it should come right off because the shaft is tapered It is quite similar to pulling a rear wheel hub.

That is easier. Go over to your Stevens Rear axle Tool wooden case and get out the Stevens Pinion Gear puller. Job done.

Now if you don’t have all the fancy era tools to do this then I would use my “bearing splitter puller”(available at better tool stores). It is a puller that you will get enough use of to justify the cost.

I have been known to take a grinder to the jaws of a puller to get them to work on difficult to pull items.

The goal was to take a 11 tooth pinion gear off one assembled drive shaft and tube and put it on another drive shaft that was disassembled. The other was a standard 10 tooth pinion. I used a 3 jaw puller and a impact to take off the standard 10 tooth un-assembled. The basketball goal base it is resting on is optional. The second one I used the Steve Jelf and others bang it on a piece of wood method. See picture forensic. There are 3 impressions in the wood. Impression 1 is the greasy nut resting on the wood before banging. Impression 2 is the first hard bang on the piece of wood with the pinion gear staying put. Impression 3 in the middle is the second bang on the piece of wood with the pinion gear impressions showing that it has now come loose. Ta da! -- IV

George, I use a second U joint to overcome the vice offset at the edge of my bench. It allows me to swing the tube and driveshaft around onto the bench so I don't have to arrange extra support. Each to his own I guess.
