Don't know if I've got this right or not, but I thought I'd post it here and see. Maybe you folks could tell me what I've got wrong better with a picture than with my writing, I can get a might verbose (as Steve Jelf can tell you), and pictures cut 1000 words down to maybe these few.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I understand there is no gasket between the 4th main and #2576. Maybe in earlier cars it is used.

You mean the one I carelessly didn't put a part number on? That holds the ball to the 4th main cup? You could be right, been so long since I've been down and under, but I think on my 22 there is one there, as I recall there are two of them, one inside between the 4th and the engine and one outside between the ball mounting and the outside of the engine. I'll have to check though.

Dave, even if one was used initially, I find it better to delete it in favour of silicone type sealant. Those thick gaskets will allow a worn ball to rattle around in the socket. Leaving it out closes the cap around the ball, perhaps enough that the separate shim shown would not be necessary.
Allan from down under.

Yes Martynn, #2580. I do not have them on my cars. I have read others do not use them. Perhaps they did use them on earlier cars and now most people are leaving them out. Maybe so excess grease can squeeze out. i do not know. Perhaps the experts will chime in later today.
p.s. I love and appreciate all the drawings you have done for the group. Thank you.

Only one gasket - #2580 goes between the ball cap & trans. cover.

Martynn
The 1909 driveshaft had a fixed pinion gear. The p/n 2541 was one piece, shaft and gear. There is a key for this #2543 pinion gear, just no nut.
1909 Parts and Price List photo.
Later '09-'10 got the changed design, first a straight drive shaft, with 7/8" bore pinion gear #2597, and then a taper-end shaft with taper pinion #2597B.

And this would be 1910-1911, this is where the change from the babbit bushings to the bearing spool was made (probably really showed up in late 1909, but as we all know that is really 1910's starting date).
