Does this look fine

Post by Wwbbim » Mon Aug 31, 2020 9:28 pm

Got done safety wiring my ruckstell and it’s now time to start painting the cases and putting it back together. I got the differential together but I just wanted to make sure I didn’t put anything together wrong or such Thanks!

Nice safety wire, you must be an aircraft mechanic also?

Nope my dad helped me through. He’s the aircraft mechanic and that’s where I’m learning how to do a lot of this stuff.

Those springy doodads look in good shape.

They came out of the cases fun and all seems to turn well while cases are attached to the differential also. And yes the springy thingsmajigs are in pretty good condition just like most of the parts.

The "springy doodads" are on the wrong side, when going forwards they should bring the differential grease towards the centre, not outwards onto the brake drums.

Good catch, Brendan. The small end of the springs goes toward the center so the large end can hang down, touching the axle tube, and (hopefully) by the spiral action picking up the excess oil and moving it towards the center.

As far as I know, those woodsworth grease springs are no longer being made. Is the prevailing opinion still that it’s a good idea to put them in even with the modern seals that are available?

Dan,

I installed the modern seals AND the spiral springs, just insurance I suppose.

Now, 3000kms later, the rear end, outer ends are dry.

I can’t see the detail on the wiring of the ten bolts for the ring gear, but Lee Pierce taught me to wire them in pairs. So bolts are wired in pairs. The three bolts on the differential can be split pinned but those using three studs should be wired together.
One old timers trick if the hub or axle taper is a little worn. Move the gear on the end of the axle shaft and widen the groove for the keyway towards the center. Then reassemble but add another fiber washer between the two shafts. Works great and saves buying new axle shafts or those nasty shims.
