Disc wheels: how can I mount old Chevy disc wheels on a T?

Post by TorontoMD » Wed Sep 30, 2020 9:37 am

Seeing as disteel wheels are hard to come by and $$$, I want to go the Chevy route.
First off, what’s the earliest year Chevrolet had disc wheels?

Second, what do I need/need to modify for them to fit

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

I have a few sets left for wood wheel hubs to Chevy disc.
Just reposted on the parts for sale if interested.

You will need to drill holes to match the Ford wood wheel hub and use the flange plate. I mounted mine with 1" thick 6061 aluminum spacers between the hub and wheel. I think 1925 was the first year for the disk wheels, but they are not the ones you want to use, not a lot of them anyway. The 1926/27 or 1928 would be the best bet. What ever year you use, make sure the rims are correct to the years. In 1928 the rims got wider as well as the felloe on the wheel. The wheels are somewhat easy to find, the rims not so much. it took me a while to find a set of the Jaxon lugs, bolts and correct rims. The inside dimeter of the hole that goes over the hub is larger so when I made my spacers I added a lip for the wheel to sit on when installed. When I bored the hole to install the on the hub, I picked an average for press fit, some being a bit tighter then others.

A few more photos of mine showing rim and felloe sizes and what happens when miss matched. To add, the 1926 to 1928 are 21", before that not sure but might have been 30".

The set Henry listed, I think I know how they were made. If I had been able to find a set of the Chevrolet plates (some things I can make, some not so much), I would have maybe done it that way. Using the Chevrolet plates would have meant pressing a sleeve on the hub to support them. ;)
1926-27 have a line up notch and bump on rim that the 1928 doesn't

This is how the rim should fit on the wheel;

I don't have a picture, but the rim clamp bolts for 1928 are longer. They should work the 26-27 but the shorter 1926-27 will not work on the 1928.

Best to find a matching set of Jaxon wheels if you can. Although they may look alike, there are at least a dozen variations in the 21 inch Jaxon disc wheels. The center disc is basically the same, however, there are at least four different widths of the steel felloe, and I don't know how many variations in the offset between the disc and the felloe. Twenty-five years ago (about), Vic Sala was restoring a Paco bodied T speedster. and trying to match up a set. He had a bunch of the wheels, but couldn't find four near enough alike to satisfy him. I had four wheels, two were a matched pair that had been on a T long before, the other two didn't match anything I had. Ed Archer transported my wheels to Vic, who found one of my wheels matched three of his close enough. Ed later brought back my matching pair plus three that made a better set for me than I had before. Vic wanted to give me the extra wheel as thanks for letting him chose from my few. A Hobby win-win!
Mixing and matching can be done, but usually one spends more on wheels that don't match well enough to have just paid a bit more in the first place for a matching set.
