how far do wood bows go into the top iron.

I have top bows that are new repo's.
The ends are squared that need to be sanded to fit the irons.
The question is, is there a certain length that goes into the iron or do I just arbitrate 6 inches or so.
Thank you!

Varies a LOT! Years, makes, models, outsource suppliers, quality and correctness of replacements, old repairs, alterations etc etc etc etc.
Regardless. What matters the most is the finished height/length/width of the entire top. If you have that information, the "slide-in fit" is done until the final desired measurement is reached.
If you do not have that critical measurement? Then you need to request that information, giving year and model/body style. (Here, we might assume it is a Ford.)

Thank you Wayne, This is for a 1912 Torpedo Roadster. I have a 1912 Touring so I will see if I can estimate the fit-in length for the touring and emulate it for the roadster.

The front and rear wood bows go in deeper than the center bows, I am using 26 bows as a reference.

Thanks Ken, I'll check them out.

Higher top bow makes sense now that you mentioned it Altair.

Good thought process Wayne, thanks!

Excessive height on the centre bow on a torpedo/roadster/runabout will make fitting the top cover without wrinkles at the side problematical. It does not need to be much above the rear bow in height, so that the measurement along the seam is comparable to the measurement along the side. Too great a difference will lead to the side flapping, requiring an unnecessary dart in the side to take out the slack.

Hope this helps,
Allan from down under.
