Help identifying oddball demountable rim

Post by Bmettli » Wed Oct 28, 2020 10:32 am

Hi all,

I recently bought a bunch of rims for my car from craigslist, and I had this oddball rim included. It is marked HAYES, and here are the measurements:

Across (length): 24 1/4 inch
Width (outer): 3 1/4 in
Width (inner): 2 3/8 in

Note the clip on the lug as well. Any ideas? Thanks!

Chevrolet. Can be redrilled as the hole is on the other side of the lug and used on a T. Hayes made wheels and rims for other cars too, Chevrolet used 30" tires for a time.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Mark is most likely on the mark. Because the valve stem hole on a Chev rim is close to the nearest lug to it, that lug has to be slotted to allow the valve stem to be lowered into the felloe, the lug also lowering over the wheel bolt at the same time.

On a Ford rim, the valve stem hole is further away from the nearest wheel bolt, enabling the valve stem to be lowered onto the felloe while the rim/tyre assembly is somewhat twisted. Then the rim/tyre can be turned back onto the felloe. Even so, the lug nearest the valve stem on a Ford rim needs to be somewhat oval to allow it to pass over that wheel bolt.

One club member once welded up the 'worn' oval lug on his rims and when he came to fit them on the car the only way it could be done was to remove the bolt nearest the 'restored' lug and refit it once the rim was on the felloe.

Allan from down under.
