I want to build a wood engine stand. There was a September 22, 2018 post by Hal Schedler, Sacramento that had photo of one he made out of 2x10 lumber. I have saw the same photo at other posts with members asking for dimensions. Does anyone know the dimensions?

The link below is for the Ford Dealer And Service Field magazine for January, 1927. On page 111 they have a nice plan for an engine dolly/stand made from pipe and pipe fittings. Also on page 96 they have an article titled "You Can Build a Slip-On Body for a Roadster", if you might be interested in building a wooden pick-up bed.

I know your looking for a particular engine stand and there are allot of designs and styles built over the years. I have a very tiny shop and space is a problem. This is one I built that uses the engine puller as the stand. It worked great for holding the engine in storage until I was ready to transfer it to an engine block stand to rebuild it. Just an option.

Well, might as well toss in a picture of mine! Have to say, I hijacked the design from Joe Bell, then just added one more "improvement", in an extra 2x4 across each leg bottom so as to clear the engine crane. Works great for me! I doubt I have $20 in material in it. Like oil and timers, there's a zillion variations, just have to figure out what works best for you and your wallet.

Are you planning on using it just for storage ... or running in an engine?

Good point Mark. What is your goal? Storage, working on or running? For working on I would go with one of the adapters sold by the suppliers. For storage does not have to be complicated, even a wood box sitting on a furniture dolly would work fine. For running something a bit more substantial would be needed where you could mount coil box, radiator and a fuel tank.

I want to use it for storage/shipping.

Jim...FWIW...that "little stand" of mine has done both quite well. About the only improvement I may make to it someday is
to steal Jim Patrick's idea and put casters under it. But good quality casters for that kind of weight frankly would probly cost
more than I have in the whole dang engine stand!! I can raise it off the floor with the engine crane just as easy and move it around
if I needed to, which I seldom have. If one is to store an engine and need to shuffle it around, I guess that'd be a different story.

For storage and easy movement around the shop, I buy the small Harbor Freight moving dollies (usually around $10 when on sale), add some scrap lumber to hold the engine nicely and voila, a T engine you can roll around the shop to get it out of the way. Can't buy the casters for that price! yes, they are plenty strong enough to hold the engine's weight.
No I don't work for HF, just like SOME of their stuff.

I am using a couple of those for storing Dodge engines (they aren't lite even without the trany!). Will make one suggestion; move them around every so often so wheels don't go flat from the weight.
For shipping, should be on a pallet or be able to pick up with fork lift. If on roll around would need locking wheels. All parts of the engine needs to stay inside the area of the pallet or enclosed, no over hang. But final say would be your shipper.

Here is my version. I use it for run testing and I am 6’4” so I want it tall!!

David do you have pictures and/or some measurements for your Harbor Freight piano mover modifications?

Made it simple (no angle cuts) 4x4, 2x4 1x4. Carriage bolts, lag bolts use any diameter threaded rod its just to steady the posts while the engine is dropped in place. Most expensive part are the caster wheels - I was going to buy a dolly and use the wheels but didn't like the quality, up to you. Harbor Freight Dollies are 30"x18" so you can use it for the base by making it wider. Wheel decision should be based on the evenness of your floor, 4" turns easier than 3", 4 swivel more maneuverable than 2 swivel on one end and 2 straight on the other

Bruce: You can have a look at these pictures as this was shipped to us from Calgary Canada and went both ways without damage.

OK, Here they are: Outside measurements 49 X 23. From nose to hump 22", hump is 4 1/2 " high and 14 inches long. I drilled into the hump so I didn't need real long screws to install the hump (with glue also). Use your imagination on the rest. Harbor freight has wheels. As mentioned, use 2X10 lumber for the sides

I run the engine on this stand using an old radiator, a lawnmower gas tank (mounted on an 18 8nch riser) attached to the stand, and a coil box and coils also mounted on the sand. You'll need a wire ( 3/16) will do) to control the throttle and spsark advance. If you run an engine for a length of time set a fan in front of the rediator

The political lawn signs are 3/16 wire. I usually snag a few leftovers after an election

A lot of nice rolling engine stand designs here, but I am 6’-3” with bad knees and need a stand with the pan support ears about 4’ off the ground so I can work on it comfortably in a standing position, without having to squat down to work on the engine. Keep that in mind if you have the same physical limitations. Jim Patrick
