"Gracie" 1923 touring car

My wife's '26 touring is called Ge Ge.
My '14 is called Betty.
The speedster has yet to earn a name except Mule.

When I bought my 1910 in 1946 I called it "the Nine" for I thought it was a 1909 T. Even when I shortly found out it was a 1910, I still called it "The Nine". After a few years, i called it "The Ten", when , a few years back, it became my only Model T, I called it "the Ten" or "My Old Friend". When i walk past it in my garage, I will pat the front fender and say "My Old Friend". I have owned it for 74 years.

I wonder how many people can say that. Not many, I bet.

I've never named vehicles, except for the names I sometimes call then when I'm working on them, which I can't post here. But on last year's trip to the OCF and back my 1915 suffered some damages, and when I got home I commented that Lizzy took a beating. So this one is Lizzy.

My mom called the 25 Touring, Bessie. When I speak to it, I address it as "Old Thing". (Don't you all speak to your cars? ) My wife insists it's name is Lottie. What the car calls us, I can only guess

I haven't owned my '18 TT for 74 years, but it's been in the family 74 years. My grandfather acquired it in 1946. It went to my uncle in 1965. I took custody in 2000. So, I sort of consider it's been part of my life since I was born in 1947.

I don't really have a name for it, but Grandpa called it his "Baby Lincoln". I've read that Ford bought the Lincoln Motor Company in 1922. A few years later, in 1928, Ford came out with the Model A. Folks thought it's styling was very similar to the Lincoln so they called it the "Baby Lincoln". I suppose that's where Grandpa got the name, although the TT looks nothing like a Model A or a Lincoln.

I named my ‘26 RPU “Uncle Buck”.

Hummingbird flew into our house 47 years ago.

I took her apart in 1977, steam-cleaned all the components, and put them into the attic.

In 1988, I began restoring her.

I haven't given my cars official names either but my first car was a Model A which the previous owner called "Flattery".
As in "Will get you nowhere".

Lizzie was so named by the previous owner, bad luck to change it !
Anyhow, it suits us, I'm famous for creative names: over the years I've had a mare named Nell, a dog named Shep, and a cat named Tom.

My hat's off to folks who can come up with clever and appropriate names. It sure adds to the fun !

Frederick because after we picked him up on Long Island, we drove all the way to Frederick, MD, before my wife came to the trailer during a gas fill-up and looked inside.

"Frederick", in honor of where we were when she first saw the car, stuck.

Abraxas has been with me/us since December, 1969.




For some reason, we never gave this car a name, although she's been part of the family since October of '97. We just call her "The Phaeton".


I sometimes think that after naming a car "Abraxas", and another "Hummingbird", I probably needed a really GOOD doctor!!

"Louisville Lizzie', got her in North TN, near the border, and the floorboards were made by Louisville co, and was living in KY when acquired.

Then "Nellie" as the farmer made pickup bed has that name carved in the inside of the tail gate!


And lastly, "Dixie", done up in confederate colors, as this touring body was found in a GA ditch.

Arthur - Because it's possible first and second owners were an Arthur and Arthur Jr. and my maternal grandfather (who started working for Ford the year my car was built - 1916) was named Arthur. Seemed like an obvious choice.

The first christian name of the last registered owner of my barn find 25 buckboard was Henrietta, so the name was obvious from the start. However, that owner had 3 christian names, the third of which was Florence. I have since learned that she was universally known as Flo. Darned if I am going to call a car Flo, even if she flows down the road at a good clip.

Movies had been around just as long as automobiles but both needed that special person to make them into what they would be.

My 18 centerdoor was Sarika which is Sarah in English. Unfortunately I sold her. My second car, the 12 towncar is Mari which is Mary in English and the 14 touring is Bozsi with two dots over the letter o, which is slang for Elizabeth. My wife is naming my cars, that way there is a little more peace in paradise. Lol. There is 36 letters in the Hungarian alphabet with dots and dashes and combination of letters. It is said that Hungarian is the most difficult language in the world. But I love my model T cars whatever their names are. Frank ( Ferenc or Feri )

My 26 touring name is Lizzy, short for Lizzabeth T Ford. My 31 A pickup is named Glen for the previous owner. And my 47 CJ2A Willys Jeep is named Teddy, short for Theodore Roosevelt because he is a Rough Rider. And Lizzy's middle name so far is Terrific and not Trouble.

Named her 'bones' because I started with just a chassis.

'24 RPU .... Frank, after my Dad. I became the caretaker when he passed. Think of him every time I work on, or drive it.

My first Model T is a 26 Roadster. The day I bought it I drove it home and the front wheels started to shimmy. I said,"Whoa Nellie". So that car became Nellie. Then I got a 26 Touring and wanted a male name so it was named "Harrison" The next car I purchased is a 22 Roadster which looked like a cat in heat, so it became, "Miss Kitty"

My grandkids named the '23 Touring, "Bullwinkle" and my Big Red 3-wheeler "Rocky." Sadly, Rocky has given up the ghost, but Bullwinkle still comes out on occasion - less and less as I get older. I'm trying to decide whether to sell him, or donate him to the Museum.

I did put this out there before. My daughter named the car.

"The Old Dog", "The Beast" .... depending on the mood.

The Roadster is named Kate after Kathryn Hepburn. She's old and shakes a bit when she speaks but man does she have spunk.

The Delivery I was going to name Spencer after Spencer Tracy but it didn't work out that way. The first year I worked on the Delivery it smelled of Pee from 60 years in a cattle barn and we called it the Pee Tee while rebuilding it and the name stuck.

I've never been in the habit of naming any of my cars, antique or modern, with the exception of my 1966 Volvo 122 wagon daily driver way back in the Nineties. She was Ilsa, after the Ingrid Bergman character in Casablanca.

In 2018 my then girl friend felt that my '24 runabout needed a name and offered suggestions. None seemed just right.

I bought the car knowing that it was a Bitsa, a Parts Salad, a Franken T. The engine and chassis was 1922, the fenders were 1924, the spare rim carrier was from a sedan or touring, the front half of the body was 1925 and grafted to the rear section of a 1917-1922 body, and the top was from an Improved Car.

When folks would ask about the car's origins I would joke that it was assembled from floor sweepings.

We named it Sweepy.

The 21 is Nelly-Bell and when I have the Chevrolet overhead on it was Nelly-Bell the Raloo Rocket. Right now it's back to just Nelly-Bell. Named after my Grandma Nelly who learned to drive in a Model T. The Rocket part came from a good friend that call it that after the conversion. Roadster "Victoria" (I didn't name that - the family said it was an obvious choice!)

Morris "Aunty" (we are very kind taking our Aunty away on so many trips and visits.....)

1936 JD AR "Clatterbang" named by me and my brothers when we were kids well over 50yrs ago based on the noise it made !

My 23 year-old grandson calls our 1909 touring, "Methuselah".

We only named one of them our homemade pickup, Stanley. Named by the kids from next door visiting relatives at the RV park in Florida.

Lassy. Twenty years after my dad sold it I tracked it down and bought it back. So against all odds she came home.

I always thought it would be fun to own a car the same age as me but its even more fun to drive a car the same age as my Grandpa. He was born in 1909 a couple of months after my Model T was built. This is how we named the car Grandpa. It also fits when it is hard to start since it only has the hand crank. While I twist the crank, my wife sometimes says "Come on Grandpa" I don't know if she is talking to the car or me but either way it fits.

Not one for naming cars generally but when I got my 09 back in 1980 I took it to show to an old-timer. He came out of his barn, stood in front of it and said:
Now that's The Proper Mr 'Enery Ford!
So, The Proper Mr 'Enery Ford it is.

A KIND SOLE A MEMBER OF THE CLUB, SENT A PHOTO OF A SHIP WITH THAT NAME.

My 1923 roadster is Buddy. I bought him the day after I graduated from 8th grade. I had a lot of unhappiness in my early teens, and having that car gave me some direction and focus in my life, so he became my buddy when I didn't have many people friends.

I hope to get him back on the road this Christmas.

The first T we bought was this 1915 Touring car. We named it in honour of my wife's 90 year old mother. Her mother remembers riding in a Model T as a little girl on the dirt and gravel roads in Mississippi in the 1930's. I made the front plate, by cutting out a sheet metal oval, and using hydraulic tubing for a "rolled" edge appearance, by cutting a slot in it, and soldering it on the edge of steel plate to give it that look. After painting the face white, and the "rolled" edge black, I then hand painted the car's name on it. Before the virus, we would drive the T over and pick her mother up on Saturdays, and drive over the back roads to Louisville Ms to Lake tiak-o'khata resort for lunch. Her momma always got a big kick out of riding a round trip of 40 miles, in the car through the back roads, for lunch.

My 1926 Roadster Pick up is simply known as “The Ute”

The 1910 has two names depending who is around at the time!
I dedicated its name as “George” after my Father who encouraged me to take up the hobby back in the 60’s
as well as an Apprenticeship at the local Ford Dealership.
It’s also known as “ Sloopy” after the song hang on Sloopy from the McCoys. My Wife recons every time she came into the garage with a Cuppa that song was playing on the radio.

I tend to call my Ts by the year of manufacture, so the 1909 touring was “09” and the 1914 touring is called the “14”
However the 1924 Coupe is known as “The Coupe” but the 1915 Speedster is “Ricky”. The latter was defined by my daughter and son-in-law.

Naming a machine is somewhat like naming a child. None the less here are the names with which we have tagged our four T Models and one A Model.
The 1922 touring is OSITA, an acronym for Old Shot In The A**.
The '24 roadster answers to Howard, from whom he was acquired.
The '25 coupe is known far and wide as Ol' Turbo. When it adopted us it had a Tru Fire set up which my miniature mind heard as Turbo Fire. The Tru Fire is long gone but the name remains.
The newest kid in the Pretty Good Garage is monickered Green T owing to its non-original green color.
Lastly but not leastly is Old Rusty, the '29 A Model coupe. 'Nuff said there I suppose.

Then again when any of them act up their respective names degenerate into appellations a fly wouldn't land on.

I think the name Lizzie is the same as Girl. Just too common. Like saying to your horse, 'Come on girl's.

We call our 23 Lizzy of Sunnybrook Farm which is where it lives. I liked the story of how the Tin Lizzy name came about so Lizzy it was.

I wrote a narrative paper about a 1915 Model T back in High School, and in the story, his name was Henry.
The moment I first saw Henry I knew it just had to be Henry.
Henry was even in my yearbook.

My Funster is called T-Tanic it was built for fun not for speed.

My latest T project is now called "The Green Thing". Yes, a very long name but the story is funny. My first test drives took me past the neighbour's house. A few months later my neighbour explained that her 4 year old daughter was yelling out and was scared of the green thing that went past their window. Mum always missed it until recently I pulled up in their driveway and young Evie was able to tell her Mum that the scary "green thing" was in their driveway. Evie is no longer scared as we went for a ride and her squeals of delight were great. The name has stuck though and Evie and her older brother always want rides in the Green Thing.

I don't really name my cars but I occasionally call my 26 Touring "Chuggers." Another T owner named their T that I saw somewhere and it just seemed fitting.

Our 4-dr sedan was named Lulubell when we bought it in Albuquerque so we just left the name on it.

My '21 is named Tilly because way back when I went looking for her, I had planned to install a pair of Tillotson carburetors. The carburetors are no longer a part of the plan, but the name stuck.

Th Lady, mostly because she's always acted like one and never failed to make it home even after her battery died one night and she quit about a mile from home. I waited for a bit, turned the key and she warm started and drove all the way home where upon when pulling into the garage she promptly quit and the battery was totally dead.....she was running on a distributor at that time. Now I'm no engineer, but as far as I know you can't warm start a distributor...yet my car did!

In my religion the term Lady refers to the outer court name of the Goddess.

This is Old Charley, my '22 touring. Sold new at the Stapp Ford Agency in Newport, KY August 2, 1922. Purchased new by Charles Braun of Melbourne, KY. Purchased in April of '82 from Charles son Carl by my good friend Bud Scudder and so named by Bud in remembrance of Charles.

One more. This, as many of you will recognize is "Otis". I bought Otis from John Mays about four years ago. John named him and I don't remember why.

My '12 is called, 'Please Start'.

All my T's even if I own more then one, Nelly-Bell after my maternal Grandmother. I have a photo of the T she learned to drive in. While mine is a 1925 the one she learned in was about a 1917 or 1918 both were made into pickups. The 1920 Dodge, until I own it, no name at this point.
