Grandchildren and Model T's

Post by Tom Hicks » Tue Feb 26, 2019 9:04 am

This girl is 6 months and she went through the Lang's catalog with me. I wish I had a video, she went on flipping pages for ten minutes. We couldn't decide on which set of speedster lights to get and it is nap time, so we will peruse it more later.

Somehow the youngsters and the old cars each make the other more enjoyable. It's nice you can share the magic with her and us too.

I wouldn't trust that face. Make all sorts of trouble and then cute
their way out of it every time. Seen it happen with my own eyes.

What great photos. If they don't make you smile, nothing will.

Part of the reason I've chosen a Model T Touring to join my old car collection is to have something akin to a glorified golf cart to putt around the neighborhood with grandkids. I don't have any yet, but my oldest offspring is soon to be married and has expressed her desire to have kids. My second oldest is not far behind.

Much to my sorrow I don't have a picture, but I can tell you not all children love the family Model T. When I was 3 (1950) sometimes after dinner the whole family would pile onto the TT and go out to the back of the orchard for fresh peaches. Not me. I'd run behind it yelling, "I'm not riding in that old junk!!"

My youngest grandson when he was 1, in his happy place, behind the wheel of our '21 Touring. When we ride it he smiles the whole ride. Some day it will be his. He's 2 now and still loves it and our Studebaker truck, our '40 Chevrolet sedan, my Massey Harris Pony tractor, my John Deere mower, and anything else with at least one wheel and an engine or a set of pedals. When he turned 2 on October 25, this past, he knew the ABCs and could count quite a ways. He and his two brothers, ages 8 and 10 love coming to Papa and Grammy's house. There's SO much love and so much to do.

The two little heads in the photo is my grand daughters riding down the road with pawpaw. They love it. They want to take a ride everytime they stop in. Who am I to say no?

Excuse me for turning the camera around, this photo shows my grandmother standing in the front of the family Ford that my great-grandfather is driving. I am the (60 yr old) grandchild, this photo inspired me to buy my own 1914 Touring car. Hopefully some of the grandchildren pictured above will have the interest and resources to keep the hobby alive 100 years from now.

Summer of '17. Ava (oldest of the 7 Grands) and I took off with the 24 down to the bottom of the hill.
She sure got the pedals figured out and I tested her the whole time hard. I had the throttle. She had to reverse and steer at the bottom, UP the hill backwards to head back out where we stopped for the pic. Must've done this 10 times!
She was 8 and is going to love the light steering on the 18! This 24 is very heavy to steer and good for teaching.
I had forgotten this! She crank started it before we headed down.
