I have a friend and club member putting a 1911 together he has the rear end halves.
But no guts. Will a later black-car ring & pinion, carrier, etc. work in this rear?

Philip, I believe the "guts" from a later rear axle will work, your friend will need an Enclosed pinion spool for the early axle halves. George

The guts of any later year axle will work. Standard or 3 to 1 gear sets will both fit.

i have an open spool fitted with a modern pinion bearing the owner says the open would be fine.
will it work in the 11 axle halves even if it does not look correct. philip?

Here are a couple of Martyn's details. The drive shaft housing may not fit onto the open spool without modification.

i dont think he has a driveshaft housing we are going to build it with black car parts except for the
early axle housings he has those. philip

Early housings are a big can of worms! Most originals are bent and also loose enough at the differential rivets that they will leak quite noticeably when put into service. Just mentioning that in case you’ve never done one before. If you don’t carefully dot all the i’s & cross all the t’s on that project (which is expensive and time consuming), you might be “married” to it for a darn long time!

Take the time to find an early pinion bearing housing. Why kludge it up at this point? Its just going to stand out like a sore thumb later! Two piece drive shaft housings are out there as well.

As mentioned above get the housings straightened. Even the late ones bend. In the illustration above it shows a gasket between the D.S. roller bearing spool and the rear end. I don't believe Ford ever offered a gasket for that application.
