It's a place holder till they get more in stock. Not uncommon to place a really high price on something till gets back in stock along with showing a qt of 1. That way the ad stays up and people can still see it. If someone does buy at that price, they will need to find one to fill the order. This is allowed on eBay.

My pal used to work for a Ford dealership parts dept. When the monthly price update showed a part increasing in price, he knew it was about to disappear. e.g. they had 100 left, so the individual price would be increased to the point where if they sold 1 or 2 they had covered the cost of the other 98 so they could go in the scrap bin.
In this case, it's going the other way, they're trying to get you to check out the rest of their inventory.

Jem, I tried to purchase what was supposed to be the last new factory right door for an '82 Chevy conventional pickup about 15 years ago. Supposedly it was at a dealership in Wyoming. I called their $750 bluff and had my local GMC dealer order it. The dealer got a message back that said that it was already sold. My theory was that the Wyoming dealer really didn't want to sell it because it would only get more valuable (it fits 73-87 Chevy and GMC).

I think it’s actually a business model , Bob. Not saying it’s a smart one. We have a local old car dealer that advertises nationwide. His cars are always,always priced about double what they are worth IMHO. A couple sales a year does it for him, I guess. He’s a real piece of work on top of that bizarre sales strategy.

Bob, I honestly think this was a mistake. I see it happen frequently on EBAY and its usually by dealers with a long history on EBAY; not fly by night dealers. No, dealer in his right mind would mark up a reproduction part that much and expect it to sell. Sometimes, I think dealers assign careless employees to place their EBAY ads and the employees carelessly make mistakes.

Guess he made 2 others as well (could have doubled up on the 1). If he sold as many as he claims for the posted price he wouldn't be selling on eBay That comes to about $700K. Maybe I'll ask if he as 2 for a discount

FRANK, After posting what I did, I too, noticed that this seller had posted other new items for sale at ridiculous prices. Either he's doing this on purpose thinking that it is going to get people's attention (it has), or he's been drinking the same spiked Cool Aide that's being served at 1600 Pennsyvania Avenue in Washington DC.
