transmission choices

i have the motor out of my 24 trying to solve some issues one that i found is a very worn
trans. eat up bad where the clutches ride and loose in every way. i have 2 spares in my stash
a 26 transmission that i can cut the brake drum down and an old transmission that has the flange bushing
instead of the steel washers this one has little or no wear where the clutches ride but the 26 has the shoes
any thoughts. philip

I’d advise a rebuild of that worn out ‘24 transmission. I have over a dozen of those round cast iron components that attaches to the tranny shaft with a set screw and that encompasses the clutch pack. I’d send you one just for the mailing cost. All the other parts are available through our suppliers. If your drums are that worn out, check them carefully for cracks. Don’t tear up a ‘26 brake drum. They’re highly sought after by the TT guys.
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

it would be much cheaper to use one of these other 2 a new drum for the 24 will be expensive.
i have more but these 2 are tight all of my others are chewed up where the clutches ride. philip

it is not the part with the set screw it is the drum where the clutches wear

Philip, there is no need to cut down the 26 brake drum.
It will fit fine with the 24 transmission cover and narrow brake band. Have this in my 25.

Bruce is correct. The 26-7 wide brake drum transmission will fit as long as you use the original narrow band. It has the advantage of being one uninterrupted surface on which the band runs, rather than the worn two piece surface of the narrow brake drum with the outer diameter of the driven plate as part of the braking surface. These two components are hard to mix and match to get a tidy brake drum surface.
