Milt Webb is still with us!

Post by Philip Lawrence » Sun Dec 06, 2020 5:55 pm

I want to apologize to everyone and especially to Milt Webb and his family for the premature announcement of his departure. I have just been contacted by a good friend of Milt's that he is indeed still very much alive!

I had been erroneously informed by a fellow club member that had got word of Milt's passing from a posted notice from another club. I made the mistake of not checking that information before I posted my previous post (Milt Webb RIP). For that I humbly apologize.

I moved the thread when it was discovered not to be true but didn't want all the nice things said to be forgotten.

Milt, I hope you enjoy the comments.

So saddened to hear about this Phil. I never got to know him very well, but met him on several occasions. We discussed model T coupes at length one day when I had mine. It was at an Auburn swap meet, and he had his coupe there. We chatted a number of times about the cars and the parts. He was a very knowledgeable and likeable man.
Thank you for informing us of this loss.

I'm sorry to hear this news. While I never had the pleasure to meet "Milt the Instructor" I often e-mailed his "How to remove a Model T From Moth Balls" and other articles to folks. He will be missed. His extended family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Respectfully submitted,

So sorry to hear of this loss. Never met the man, legend, and mentor to others but heard a lot of great things about him over the years. A true loss to his family and ours. RIP Great One!

I met Milt in 2010 in Mesa for the 40th Anniversary gathering of Rosenthal Awardees. He was a real down-to-earth fellow who was a true fountain of wisdom about model T's and their maintenance. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with him and was humbled by his acceptance and instant rapport with a total stranger who shared his interest. His passing is a great loss to the hobby.

I was fortunate enough to meet him and spent a lot of time with him on the 2003 Ford Centennial Model T Tour. I think I must have talked to him nearly every night after the day's touring on that trip. He was truly approachable and a very nice guy. His level of knowledge was astounding, and unlike a lot of people, he had logical, scientific explanations for his advice and maintenance practices. The Model T world has lost another giant.

I'm sorry our paths never crossed, but when folks ask about what to do to get their "new" Model T running I refer them to Milt's classic "Mothballs" article. With that and other writings, he certainly made a wonderful contribution to the Model T world.

Milt was the chief mechanic at the California Auto Museum in Sacramento. 'Milt's Garage" was created in a section of the museum and dedicated to him in February 2019. Here he is at the dedication with many of is friends.

The Sacramento Valley T Club restored a 1923 Touring from donated parts to help members learn to work on their own cars and to raise funds for charity. Milt was our instructor on many aspects of the project. Here he is showing us how to check piston clearance on the freshly machined block.

So sad to hear this, I was fortunate to live just a few miles from Milt, have been at his shop many times. He would call me often when he needed help on projects he took on. I learned so much from him. He would give me copies of the articles he would write to proof read before having them printed Such a great wealth of information he was, he will be greatly missed.

Milt was a genius at diagnostics and teaching others that crucial skill. Not only on model T’s but cars up to the latest models. He published books on the subject that have bailed me out of sticky problems many times. I have autographed copies of all his books.
Milt was one of three members of the Mother Lode club to be given the Rosenthal award. He also got the Yumori memorial award. Not many people behave bagged both of those prestigious awards and he very much deserved them.
One of my favorite memories of the man was on one of our tours through the redwoods in northwestern California. One of the cars lost power on one cylinder. We were tweaking the coils and such and Milt said, “You’ve got to start with the basics. Do you have compression?” We did not. Turned out one valve retainer had failed with the pin wearing through it. No problem, Milt carried spares in his car. We replaced it and the car ran just fine.
Rest In Peace my friend.

NOT true. Milt has not passed. Don't know where this started. Send him a Christmas card, he'd enjoy it. Milt fell a while back and bumped his head that resulted in his ability to swallow. He has been fed through a tube since. He has full time live in help. He may not be in the best shape but he is still with us. His wife Dorothy died about six months ago. This is the word straight from his Daughter Via text to our club's secretary.

I received this from Deanna, Milt's daughter.

Milton Webb has not passed away, he is fine and still living in his home in CA.
He has 24 hour caretakers and friends and family that visit him often.
It is so nice to hear all the nice words about my father.

Thank you

He says thank you for all the support he has had over the past 2 years since his fall.
And wishes he could be out there on the open road with you all in his Model T.

After reading these wonderful tributes to Milt, I got to thinking that it is sad that we often wait until someone has passed before saying nice things about what they meant to our lives. I resolve to say nice things to and about people while they are still around to hear them.

Milt, I'm glad that the rumors of your passing were exaggerated :D

Hmm. The two threads got merged. I think that is a good thing all in all. However the timing of the mixes do make some comments a bit disjointed.
Regardless! I hope Milt gets a big kick out of all this! And I hope he and his family have a wonderful holiday season!
And that goes for everyone else on this forum.
