FJ - Legendary Kim Dobbins

Post by FreighTer Jim » Sun Mar 03, 2019 9:43 am

I told KD that he surely is “ Dorian Gray “ .... ;)

Ray Wells thinks it has been 40 years they have known each other - that seems to be right around the average friendship - so KD has to be at least 89 years old ... :(

If you have bought or sold Model T parts - particularly the early years - chances are KD was involved at some point.

Watching him at Bakersfield Swap - I realized awhile back - folks really enjoy interacting with him.

He is a Nice Guy.

He stepped up to oversee a major sympathetic restoration project last year - bringing a 1904 Ford Model B back to Life so ( hopefully ) it can enter and finish the New London to New Brighton Run this year.

We seldom say “ Thank You “ to folks until they Pass.

We seldom pat them on the back and say “ Good Job “.

We often take them for granted.

So Thank You Mr. Kim Dobbins ...

For your kindness - knowledge - curiousity.

For your generous spirit.

For your friendship.

Thanks, but I'm not legendary! There are so many that I've learned from and know so much more then me. I've been real fortunate to have learned form so many good and talented people that have taught me. Ernie Brown, Steve Coniff, Don Skille, Wayland Henry and so many others.

Sometime Jim is Liitle over the top but he is correct about not thanking people until they pass. I considered Bruce McCalley a friend, yet when we met it was a constant stream of verbal jabs, he usually won, but I learned so much and it was always worth the effort.
Kim is a different but I too consider him a friend. Indeed without Kim I would not have bought or started the 09 project. Thanks Kim, I really appreciate all you do for me personally and for the hobby in general.

Kim helped me purchase my 11 after I followed FJ’s advice to ask Kim about the car. FJ said if there was an early T for sale in southern California Kim would likely know the car. FJ was right. Kim didn’t know me but took the time to answer my questions, he knew the car and the seller, and then he helped pack the car and all the parts so they could be shipped. Without his help I would not have been brave enough to purchase an unassembled car two thousand miles away. Art

It seems like my wife is always telling me what to do and not to do. When she told me to quit acting like a flamingo, I had to put my foot down.

I've known Kim at least 40 years. We only live about 4 miles from each other, so that certainly helps. We have helped each other out numerous times on many things. He is definitely on the A list! The only fault I can think of with him is he keeps putting off finishing up that '09 of his. I seriously doubt if he will do that before I leave this world!

Just another day ...

Post by FreighTer Jim » Fri Dec 13, 2019 2:28 pm

It was just another day at KD's house ....

A great Jewish Deli Lunch with LS and a nice visit.

The 1904 Ford Model B had made considerable progress since my last visit ... ;)

The engine is pretty much done - the newly fabricated parts for the transmission arrived by mail.

It won't run by my birthday next week - but I bet it will be running for KD's on December 31st.

This guy - he is quite remarkable.

Historic Day

Post by FreighTer Jim » Thu Jun 18, 2020 6:12 pm

My Friend Kim Dobbins 👍

After (18) months.
After hundreds of hours.

The 1904 Ford Model B 51-52 took it’s
maiden voyage down a neighborhood street
in a California town.

Behind the wheel on a homemade seat

Was Legendary Kim Dobbins 🙏

This Is A Historic Day

Just Another Day

Post by FreighTer Jim » Thu Jul 16, 2020 7:17 pm

(12) Years On The Road
This is my favorite place to pass the day
On this day - the last day - there is work

The hood hinge pin replaced
Carpet cut
Hood modification to fit
Tail light bracket modification
Headlight fit

All while listening to The Neil Young
Radio Channel in the backyard garage 😉

I can’t ask for a better day than this ❤️

The Last Repair

Post by FreighTer Jim » Fri Jul 17, 2020 7:39 am

The passenger side front coach light lens wouldn’t close correctly - it kept popping open.

Turns out the catch on the lens housing was soldered off center of the fastener & at an angle.

Kim heated up the catch & re-soldered
it at the correct position.
