Building a Foot Throttle from Scratch

Post by Henry K. Lee » Sun Mar 03, 2019 2:31 pm

A little time is all it takes with minimal supplies. My Dad and I came up with this system years back, you can even make up a chain and bell crank to still use a hand throttle in conjunction with it.

Simple list of materials from your local hardware stores; 2 feet 1/8" X 1" flat steel (cut in half) , 2 each 3/8" ID steel tubing 1 1/8" long, 13" X 5/16" round stock, 2 each 3/8" OD steel fuel tubing 1 1/2" long, 1 each old spoon gas pedal (1930's Fords, etc.) 3 each 1/8" tension/split pins 3/4" long, 1 each 12" X 3/16" round stock, some light tension pull springs. I like using self sealing washers under the mounting plate to the transmission inspection plate. Really stops any leaks. The fuel tubing is installed into the heavier tubing to act as a secondary bushing and helps in any misalignment issues and you simply just flare the ends. You will also need two ends for the hook up at carb and pedal rod, the pedal rod downward arm can be purchased from multiple vendors.

All the Best,

Hank in Tin-A-See

Nice job Hank, nice simple approach and thnx for the components list, I'm sure if anyone plans on building one, your list and pictures will save time.

Thanks for sharing. My TT needs one and I think I can build it by following your plans.

This is one time when our correct hand drive cars makes the task easy. Pedal on the right, straight rod for ward to the carb just like Hank shows. Somebody here in Australia made a bolt on fitting which allows the foot throttle to over-ride the hand throttle but leaves it still connected and opperable if required.

I have an old TTP foot throttle or parts thereof. Does anyone have the installation instructions or diagram for it? It has a bellcrank, but it is not obvious how it is installed. Paul

Kewl idea and looks authentic.
This is not rough on the spring return and no additional one needed?
