Question about the clutch spring

Got 2 questions?
1st Can I attach the clutch spring to the drive plate and then evenly screw it down to the brake drum? Or will that put too much pressure on the clutch ring and the 3 pins that hit the clutch fingers?
2nd. After I compress the clutch spring the pin should rest in a small detent. However I see two places it has been resting. so should it go like this? Lined up to the hole.
Or once the pin is in should I rotate it so it falls down into this spot.
Seems if the pin slips in the second position the spring won't be adjusted to 2"
Is there something that prevents it from falling as in the second picture?

Yes, that pin rides in the notch of the clutch spring basket. Rotate the basket as you have the spring compressed to align the pin.
And no, you can't put the spring and basket on before fitting the driving plate.
Get out your Ford Service Manual, and study Chapter III, paragraphs 311 and beyond.

Your second photo is how the pin & basket should be positioned. I see wear marks where the pin rests against the bottom edge of the basket. Be sure the wear is not excessive. The pins have been known to wear through the basket in extreme cases.

Question 1, yes you can, it's the only way I've ever fitted the drive plate, screw out the 3 adjuster screws and when fitting to brake drum, just make sure the 3 pins on the push plate are poking through and do up the bolts evenly. The spring puts no pressure on any thing until you replace and adjust the 3 finger screws.

So once I compress the spring and drive the pin in do I just grab the whole spring and turn it until it it rests in the bottom of the cup? I reread chapter 3 paragraph 314 Seems like with the pressure compressing it that I won't be able to turn it.
