speedster project. Craveroiler/Marvel Mystery Oil
Well the speedster project is running good and Im doing all the little things now. One of the things I finally hooked up was the "Craveroiler". It is a upper cylinder lubricator. I will be running Marvel Mystery Oil thru it. I had already tested it a few times. I was curious how hard it would be to regulate. If I turn the valve just a little it starts the fluid to "bubble" If I open it all the way the fluid is very very actively bubbling. I ran the engine about a half hour with the valve wide open and I never saw any smoke or even could smell the Marvel Mystery Oil at all. After the half hour of wide open valve I used maybe 1/16 to 1/8 inch of fluid from the glass. So I am very pleased with the oiler. My opinion of the use of the oiler is "it probably is doing no real good" but "it is probably not hurting anything either" So it is a "cool" addition to the car.
Now for the "rest of the story" Yesterday my son came by for the first time in months. He had not seen or heard the engine run yet, so I started it up and let it run for him to see. It had ran about 15 minutes, and I had the oiler valve "wide open" so he could see it in action. I wanted to show him how easy the engine started with the hand crank, so I killed the engine. I turned the key back on, and walked to the front to start it with the crank. "BUT" I forgot to reset the spark advance lever. And I never thought about closing the Craveroiler valve. Well when I started to crank. It backfired thru the carb. Not real bad, It did not even kick the handle backwards. But in that 1 second time frame it completely emptied the Craveroiler thru the five little holes in the brass cap on top of the oiler. There was about 1 cup of Marvel Mystery Oil in the oiler. But it was everywhere inside my shop.. It was all over the car, on the walls, the ceiling, Me and my son. How could so little oil make such a big mess. ....
So the lesson to be learned by this is to "always retard the spark" and "never try to start the engine with the oiler valve open" or you could end up like me, and spend a half a day cleaning up. But Marvel Mystery Oil at least smells real nice...

I love your attention to detail Donnie. I always look forward to your posts. Love the extension blocks on the intake manifold, to clear the Miles dual exhaust manifold, correct? The addition of the priming cocks to the extension blocks is a great detail.
I’m mounting the same oiler on my project. It just pipes to the intake manifold, correct?

Tim, I made the spacer blocks from 2 inch thick aluminumn bar stock I bought on e-bay. I drilled the hole same size as intake on my old worn out drill press, then I traced around the intake with the holes aligned with a craftsmen socket that just fit . Then I cut out the shape on my wood working band saw. Next I sanded to shape with my old Craftsman portable belt sander attached to a home made table made of old scrap plywood. We use nothing but the best technology here in the hills of Arkansas. After I made them they just looked "plain" so I added the priming cups to help them not be so "plain". Yes the copper tube for the Craveroiler just hooks to the intake with a 1/8 inch pipe fitting .
Adam, Good idea about the check valve. Ill start looking at adding one.

This is how we learn, from another’s fudgeups. I already have a check valve wired to my unit, so I don’t forget. I’m too proud ( and busy) to post all my daily screw ups.

That's a great story. What is the purpose of having the oil bubble and at different rates no less?

Hudson, When the incoming air passes thru the oil, the air gets saturated with oil as the bubbles vaporize the oil. I assume that the more air you allow thru the oil, the more saturated the air becomes and the more oil saturated air is going to the intake and mixing with the incoming air/fuel ratio.
